Loving a fictional character does not make you insane, deranged, sick-in-the-head or any variation of the above.
Fuck what others say, just do what makes you happy and don't let people who force their contradicting opinions on you feel bad about it.

Loving a fictional character so much that it hinders your daily life, causing you to feel unhappy in you real relationships and romances, however, is cause for concern.

Maybe the fact that there`s nothing in OPs immediate vicinity that is better than a fictional character should cause concern, but not OP him/herself. I had the same kind of dilemma back then, but I found a person beyond my wildest dreams. Keep searching, OP :) Good luck.

But that's where I see the root of the problem. Why would they search? If they feel like their relationship with a character is satisfying, and there is no real person who could be the character's rival? They would have NO motivation to search, especially since such a search actually requires to spend time, money and effort on it.

The thing is, when you "fall in love" with a fictional character, you're basically falling in love with your own expectations and desires since that person is going to conform to your ever fantasy. A real person actually have their own personality and doesn't exist solely to please you... So yes, although it might be exhilarating to find a fictional figure that answers all your needs, you're not really connecting with another person.

Word. People who are perfect on paper aren't always that way in real life, because on paper, their flaws become categorized neatly and what they say and do can't hurt you directly.

This, particularly if you fall in love with a character who in canon is batshit insane or very dangerous. It's easy to love a character in a story but I think if half of the general population had to deal with a fictional crazy guy or personality-like-a-rock bishounen they love in real life, they'd lose interest pretty quick. This is coming from someone who's liked both kinds of characters: fun to write about, but you wouldn't want to constantly have a knife at your back in real life.
