I wonder if the reason for this is related to the fact that, when the character was first conceived, her gender wasn't decided. People were about as likely to refer to PM as "him" as "her". I think the scales eventually tilted toward female, so Hussie confirmed it that way. It's not like it makes a lot of difference to the character - you're not going to come out of countless years wandering the desert particularly feminine.

The "lone survivor" is a generally masculine archetype, and men tend to be better-characterised in fiction*. So that might be responsible for her being such a great character.


(*this is just a trend, of course, not a rule. And Homestuck tends to be one of the better aversions. It probably has more strong female characters than strong male characters, if by a small margin.)

Sometimes I feel like I must be the only one who likes ALL of the (reoccurring) characters.

PM is amazing though, and you don't have to have text/conversations in order to have a fleshed out character, not in a visual medium... I think she's gotten some decent characterization already.

PM is pretty independant and badass without being a bitch
WQ seems fairly wise and kind but has had very little development
Rose is intelligent, good at research, and very determined
Jade suffers from lack of development and seems to be kinda spaz but friendly, and not very smart
Sn0wman is a cool, mysterious bitch
Terezi is as bad and manipulative of a person as Vriska, she just manages to cover it up better
Vriska is an emotional trainwreck who keeps fucking everything up trying to fix her previous fuckups
Nepeta is a stereotypical shipper/roleplayer/fangirl minus a few hundred pounds
Kanayas personality is a bit like Rose but she's unwilling to take risks and thus comes off as kinda dull
Aradia is b0ring
Feferi could go anywhere at this point, she needs more development

Yeah, she also gets mad about people on the internet yelling at her, was a pretty horribad server player to Dave, acts as though her dead Grandfather still has influence over her (also a sign of insanity) and is generally a derp in most conversations she has with others.

PM may very well be my favorite character in the whole comic. She's had practically no lines at all of actual dialogue, but I got some very real emotion from her character throughout the course of the story. She and the other exiles are all truly adorable to watch, as well as really heartbreaking in their own ways. All the pages with them just make me smile.
