Holy crap. These books. Did they ever find him?? Last I checked they were really close to finding him, and the bad guy was about to detonate the "time bomb." IT WAS LEFT ON A CLIFFHANGER.

God, that was like 1994.

AAMH

Sounds like you only read through the third book. There are four books in the series. You should check them out. They're really quite superb.

I emailed the author a couple times and he emailed me back, I dont know if he will ever finish them because the person who was working with him had a falling out. :

From what I understand, the issue is that the publisher hardcore fucked up the distribution of the fourth book, so its sales ended up being bad, so the publisher didn't pick up future options. They're not co-written if that's what you're suggesting. (The AI Gang was and that's why it wasn't continued, but that's a pretty different series.)

... I'm sorry, I know it's awful but-

I'm too distracted by the fact it looks like the author's name is "Couille" on that cover to actually comment on the secret.
I know it's supposed to be "Coville" but fffff cannot unsee. If you know a bit of French you'll see what I'm talking about.

Eeeee! Bruce Coville secret!

And yeah, Snout was kind of a dick. Actually a lot of people in that series behaved pretty badly.

Haha I re-read these after Coville showed up on FSecret last time (for a diff series though, the My Teacher is an Alien ones). Go go remind me of my childhood!

Anyway, regarding your post, that's one of my favorite things about them though. The protagonists are seriously flawed too. The captain is an antisocial hardass. The diplomatic officer is a liar and somewhat insubordinate. The mechanic is disdainful and kinda racist. Snout's not usually too douchey but he's got a real holier-than-thou streak at times. Tar Gibbons is probably the only one who never pulls a total jerk move. It's nice though because normally kid's books aren't willing to show realistic personalities. These characters were more fun because they had more depth.

THIS. I loooved that they weren't this perfect alien cast, swooping in to criticize the protagonist. Bruce is actually usually really good about that; all his books have characters that have interesting and in-depth personalities.

[identity profile] shinshokuinsane.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Jumping in to say that I agree as well. It's so annoying when books have the faultless "others" (be they alien or not) show up to explain to our culture how horrible and primitive we are, versus how *~*advanced*~* and *-~-*noble*-~-* they are. Truthfulness aside, it's revoltingly condescending, and kids can pick up on that (as well as adults).

Coville made sure that the books had valuable lessons, but they weren't a result of characters lecturing the Bad Ol' Humans. Instead, they came about naturally in how the book portrayed problem-solving. Even when the aliens got their jabs in, the point was usually "think before you speak." ("Do you come from a swamp planet?")

Was that the secret about anon still waiting for the sequels?

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember what happened at the end of this book, but I do remember loving the heck out of this series when I was younger. I am so glad there are other fans out there. :D Thanks for reminding me to reread it.

Bruce Coville was my very favorite when I was a kid. Thanks so much for making this secret! It gave me a huge smile to remember.
