Everyone wants more privacy than they get in dorms. IDK something about this just seems very spoiled to me.

Most people live the first 18 years of their life in their own room, it's kind of weird to go "Okay, you're living out on your own for your first time! You finally have privacy away from family! Oh but someone lives within 10 feet of you at all times." Have you ever been in a dorm room? They're fucking TINY and one of mine used to be so small you could touch your roommate on her bed if you put your arm out from your own bed. It's really hard dealing with the stress of college and never even having time to yourself to chill in private unless they happen to be out. And having to establish a relationship with a stranger every year is just fucking aggravating after the first time.

having a single is beyond the financial capabilities of many people, but I don't think it's spoiled to want one/have one if you can. Not everyone is a natural extrovert who is comfortable being around people constantly.

Yes I've had one and it was horrible but that's such a petty reason to switch.

Honestly I don't think there's such thing as a "petty" reason to switch, since the only reason you're in a double/triple to begin with is space issues. Why would you need a "valid" reason to go somewhere you're more comfortable with?

Well said! I personally get completely frazzled if I'm around other people twenty four seven. If I don't have at least half an hour a day completely to myself I get so stressed out it's ridiculous.

I'm lucky in that in Britain it's quite rare to have to share a room at uni, and even if you do, it's never for longer than one term.

[citation needed]? I'm honestly curious as to the extent that this is true, and if so, where it is true. I grew up sharing a room with either one or both of my siblings most of the time, and I'm used to that being the norm. I'm sure it's partly a regional thing based on the cost of land/housing, partly family size (which can be cultural), and partly social class (in which case not sharing a room probably correlates with subsequent college attendance at least somewhat).

Are you really gonna start shit over me saying "most"? I didn't say "all." I'll change it to "some" if it prevents you from getting your panties in a wad. "Some" people grows up in their own rooms. Others always share. I wasn't talking about them.

As a non-American, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND the whole sharing-a-room-for-a-year with someone you have never met.

That's crazy!

Especially if you're an introvert.

I don't know how true this is for everywhere else, but my campus is both small and old, so a city has grown up around it. The university would have trouble expanding the campus itself, and on the existing campus there is no room to expand the dorms, so it's a space issue. Also, it's cheaper for the people living in the dorms to share, just like it's cheaper to share an apartment with friends than it is to get one yourself.

My uni also requires first-years to live in dorms, so what with the space issue it's just easier for people to live two to a room than try to find room for everybody to have their own room. They're decent-sized rooms, too, so it's not a major hardship.

I'm not quite sure about the 'never met this person before but it'd be a good idea to live with them for six months' situation either, but as someone who had her own room for eighteen years, I asked for a roomie because I hadn't met them before. If I hadn't had a double room, I probably would have ended up spending all my free time alone in my room on the internet. With a roommate, I got to meet people I might not have otherwise, and I've always got someone to bitch about hard assignments to on a moment's notice, or to blow off homework for watching The Big Bang Theory with.

Also, she has a fridge, and I don't. That alone was worth it.

Actually, in my experience, you only really need to establish a relationship with a stranger (or in my case, head down and soldier through it as we each politely ignored each other) for the first year. In my school at least (and in my brother's too, come to think of it), after your freshman year, you were able to request your roomates if you wanted to - either to stick with your existing one, or share with a friend, or be placed randomly if that was your preference. So yeah, the privacy issue was still there, but the stranger part, not so much.
