Because, frankly, I can't think of a rational reason not to believe it.

It wouldn't ~change his personality at all for him to be trans, would it? At least not within the scope of the story. And he's not confirmed as trans - but he's not confirmed as cis, either. Saying he is just plays into trans erasure.

And it shouldn't change the way I view him, for him to be trans - but thing I wonder is if it does, in some subconscious way, that leads me not to grok the idea. And that makes me wonder if I'm a transphobe.

But is there rational reason to believe it? Otherwise, everyone's just making their own decisions and choices about who a character is behind the scenes, which means you shouldn't feel bad if you can't get behind a certain viewpoint. Pretty sure you're overthinking it. After all, there aren't indications in the canon of Harry Potter (just for a well-known example) to absolutely confirm that Albus Dumbledore was born male and is cisgendered - but if someone wrote a fic where he was FtM, I probably wouldn't take that view. I'd be comfortable saying he was cis, no matter what, and I don't think it'd harm the image or self-esteem or trans people as a whole.

To be honest, I think that being as genuinely concerned with whether or not you're a transphobe is a good sign that you aren't actually transphobic.
