Haven't played any of the games, so I've only gone through summaries, a handful of LPs, and watching someone else play this one.

I kind of wish I could get this sentiment though, especially since you already know from the beginning that they're all going to die. Reach falls. It's practically on the back of the box/preview/whatever. That's not a spoiler is it? It's kind of like that Star Wars secret the other day, where someone gets emotional during the prequels even though they know how it all turns out.

Wait, is it the way they died? I'll admit Kat's did make me shake a fist at the screen.

Meh. Jorge's death was epic, but Kat's was just abrupt. I think that if her death had been a bit more dramatic, it might have had a bigger impact on me.

I kind of liked Kat's death. I mean, war is unfair, abrupt, and sometimes it is not the bloodiest battles that kill a soldier, but the small things. In Band of Brothers, even though it was based on the service of the members of Easy Company, there were main characters that sometimes died without being able to fight: A stray bullet, a friendly grenade, a mortar round, a motor accident, and sometimes "friendly" fire.

The fact just when you were bonding with Kat (her question, "First glassing? Mine too.", was practically love talk between Spartans) when she gets killed, gave the feeling that not only was the war lost, but that loved ones were still dying, and nothing was stopping the alien juggernaut. Then again, considering she was the only girl of the group, I do wonder about the gender problems in the gaming industry...

Jorge's death? That one was crudely tragic. Especially what happens after it. But still, the death of your character? That one is just demoralizing. I always try to kill as many of my enemies as possible, but there is always a point where you just cannot win.

Kat's death definitely hit me the hardest since it was so sudden and I honestly wasn't expecting it. Even though I knew they were all going to die eventually (and once one fell I knew they'd all start to one chapter at a time) it was still rough to go through. :/

I feel the same way, OP. This entire game was pretty moving for me, especially with how brilliantly Bungie handled the sequence after the credits. It really was masterful storytelling.
