Pretty sure anyone who likes vampires has a bone to pick with Stephenie Meyer.
I'm in pretty much the same boat, OP. I grew up on Near Dark, Blade, The Hunger, Salem's Lot, Vampire Hunter D not to mention more recent efforts like 30 Days Of Night and Fangland. That hack has a lot to answer for. Fuck glitter, I want my monstrous killing machines back.

That's not the say you can't someday take it back from her, OP. We just need time for this nonsense to goddamn die already, then show 'em how to do vampires right. No glitter, just blood.

You can still write it. And anyone who makes comparison are going for the quick vampire similarity.

The Twilight thing will die down eventually.

Yeah, nowadays whenever I mention I like vampires, I feel the need to point out I liked them before SMeyer. It's a pain in the neck to have to feel like I need to justify something I've loved for so long because some hack came along and was incredibly popular with a watered-down, bullshit version. Hell, for all their whining and navel-gazing,at least Anne Rice's vampires killed people and could be pretty ruthless, even the "nice" ones like Louis.

No, they won't. Even now there are books and series about non-Twilight vampires. Hopefully the Twilight craze itself will die out soon. The genre has been in existence for almost two centuries now, for fuck's sake! With many, many different interpretations. For all its popularity now, Twilight's just one of them, and most people are aware of that. Stop giving it an importance it doesn't have.

Give it 10 years and everyone will have forgotten it.

I've also loved vampires since I was very young and get annoyed that her version has become so popular. However, the genre has been there for decades, there are all kinds of vampire books out there and hers will eventually just be a blip on the radar. Don't just give up!

If you're fortunate enough to be published, your work would probably get on the shelves after this whole Twilight thing has blown over, or, barring that, sail in on the last wave of its popularity. You might get a little flak from people who don't know what they're talking about, but so what? People who like actual vampire stories didn't just disappear.

Vampires have gone through cycles of popularity before. And while a lot of people do associate mentions of vampires with Twilight right now, there are other vampire series that are popular right now, too, and Twilight is a passing trend. If you get anything of yours published, it will likely be after a lot of the buzz has died down. And if your stories are very different than Twilight, they will hopefully be marketed differently, anyway.
