Can't someone who has seen the series give you warnings if it's going to come up again?

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I only know one other person who is familiar with the series, and I don't know them well enough to want to tell them my specific phobia.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only suggest asking here anon then (or anywhere you can ask anon). Say, in as generalized a way as possible, what your issue is and those of us who have seen it can tell you if it's a common occurence.

Phobias aren't supposed to make sense, that's why they are illogical or irrational fears. Everyone has a phobia about something.

[identity profile] antoj.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
i want to know what it is.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's something so innocuous and embarassing that I really don't want to say it, even under cover of anon. In fact, it's so stupid I actually tell people it's the slightly less embarassing but still horribly embarassing generalisation of the phobia. I know being in denial about my phobia all my life is why I'm in such a mess, but I can't trust people not to laugh and link me to YouTube videos of it like it's all a big joke and doesn't leave me having nightmares for weeks.

I will say this, though - it's not an animal or a plant; it is partially an item and partly an activity that can be done with that item; it's something I've hated since childhood; and if it is related to a common phobia that phobia is suffocation. I am not going to answer any more questions about the phobia than this.

Will you let me pass that bridge if I solve your riddle though

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess if you like, but I am not going to tell you whether you are right or wrong. I wish I hadn't even given that little bit of information that I gave now.

Is it being gagged by a tooth brush, because that's my phobia. Brushing twice a day is brutal.

balllllooooooooons?

Re: OP

Can we at least know the show?

Re: OP

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon: if you are in a position to do so, find a therapist. When I visited one, I told them all sorts of things about myself that I thought I would be laughed at or even hated for, and instead they really, really helped me. Please do this for yourself.

[identity profile] icecrystal2k.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
This! There's nothing shameful about phobias, or whatever quirks of psyche we all have. Nobody should laugh at those things, everyone has them. Don't worry about the particulars, people have been phobic about stranger things, I'm sure.

But telling someone about it, a professional in absolute confidence, might help you come up with strategies to deal with it instead of avoidance and having to feel ashamed about it.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Has the word "trigger" now lost all meaning? Phobias, really?

I'd like to request trigger warnings for hornets, wasps, and bees, spiders, dogs, and bears, and yes, I mean every dog, no matter how cute or innocuous you think it might be. That shit'll still make me wake up in a cold sweat.

I'm 100% in support of warning about difficult, disturbing, and potentially extremely, extremely painful content when it might tap into psychological trauma that someone is dealing with. That's a mark of empathy and respect for the person who has to deal with it every day.

But I've got phobias too and that's nowhere near the same as the kind of shit survivors of various abuses have to deal with. I wake up crying and shaking because I've just had a dream about spiders, seeing them in real life makes me almost vomit as fight or flight kicks in, but that's what having a phobia is and life cannot be a playpen.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's so ridiculous how the OP is demanding everyone go out of their way and make a huge effort to let him/her watch this series.

Except exactly the opposite, but you go on being-self righteous about how strong and special you are!

(Anonymous) 2010-12-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate seeing a support system for people with actual psychological trauma co-opted by neurotic navel-gazing. If compartmentalizing something my brain has decided for zero reason at all is way awful is being self righteous then so be it. You're right, we all deserve hugs and gold stickers for getting out of bed in the morning. Phobias aren't depression or other mental illness and I'm not belittling the seriousness of those things and actual mental wounds caused by traumatic experiences.

Keep promoting the circlejerk of self victimization!

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Phobias aren't depression or other mental illness

Except for the part where they are. And can be debilitating. Agoraphobia comes to mind. :/

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The exact words I used were 'something that triggers my... phobia'. Using the word 'trigger' in the sense of 'something which sets off something'. I'm not remotely conflating it with PTSD triggers and I'm actually really offended that you assume I am.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I owe you an apology for being rude and over-reacting. I'm sorry.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I appreciated that a lot.

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on your description upthread, the only thing I can think of is that your phobia might be . If it's that, I believe it's a more common phobia than you might think. Regardless, I think you should definitely look into therapy; this is exactly what it's there for, and I promise that a decent therapist will not laugh and has heard of stranger things. If it's keeping you from being functional, which (from your secret) it is, you should absolutely do it.

Also, my story:

You know what my phobia is? Dead birds. Seriously. Living birds? Fine. Other kinds of dead animals? No problem! It's just dead birds.

Do you have any idea how many movies and shows just toss in a dead bird for symbolism or whatever? It happens all the damn time. Even when it's an adaptation and the source material has no dead birds. The Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie was going fine, Draco was repairing the Vanishing Cabinet, and then SURPRISE DEAD BIRD! I have no idea how I ended up loving FMA so much, when the first two episodes of the first anime were basically NONSTOP DEAD BIRDS WITH BONUS ZOMBIE BIRD.

The weird thing is, though, that will all those unexpected dead birds cropping up, I'm actually getting kinda desensitized to it. So seeing them in fiction doesn't bother me so much anymore. (Seeing them in real life is another story.)

[identity profile] heretherebefic.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, OP, if it does happen to be the above poster's guess: (I don't know how to do the white text, so if reading about it will bother you just... ignore me.) I saw a balloon slowly deflate when I was a small child, and it absolutely horrified me. I still can't stand seeing or hearing them pop.

So if that is your phobia, and if it helps, you're not alone.

[identity profile] roaringmay.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
This is ~somewhat OT but FUCK THAT CREEPY BIRD IN FMA seriously I had NIGHTMARES for weeks. DDDDD:

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
OT, but that's an interesting image you used for this secret. Source?
