I don't think you should feel so awful about that. It's just something you're interested in. Maybe it's the psychological aspect? Maybe deep down you would like to comfort victims of childhood abuse? Maybe it's something else? Who knows.

It's not like you're supporting abuse by reading stories about abuse, right? Personally I like reading h/c because I love it when in the end the hurt character feels better again.
I think it's beautiful to comfort and cheer people up. It makes me feel happy.

I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you :)

Same on all counts, only I figured out recently why I like it. God knows I hope that none of my friends are keeping anything like that hidden, but just the idea that you can know so little about someone you know so well is genuinely fascinating to me, because really that's what any kind of human connection is. You'll never know them completely. I love that moment of realisation in Character A that Character B has this whole life that A isn't aware of, something that probably makes up a huge amount of B's way of looking at the world. I think that people very rarely view others as actual people. Not in a horrible way or anything, but it just often doesn't occur that they exist on as many layers as you do because you can't see all of them the way you can do yourself. I also firmly believe based on experience that the strongest friendships come from helping each other through the bad shit and I always love to read about friendships in fiction. So for me it's about how it cements a friendship that I'm already invested in from canon, and that idea of discovering that other people are real people.

I don't know if that made sense, because of the rather marvellous bottle of red I've just finished off, but there you go, I have thoughts.

(On another level, I like it because whilst my childhood was thankfully free of abuse/trauma, I'm still a pro at the whole hiding my feelings from people I know shebang, and secretly I really hope that one day it'll work out like it always does in fic, and somebody will just accidentally stumble across the realisation that I'm feeling bad about shit and need their help, because I've not got the stones to just up and tell them myself. But that's less interesting theorising and more depressing, so I disregard that reason.)

I just completely fell in love with that comment. This just so freaking much. Also I feel the need to add, that I'm impressed by your comment considering you wrote it while drunk, since the last time I went on F!S drunk, reading through the secrets and comments was nothing but exhausting to me *lol*

because it's interesting? i don't really think this is something to worry about. childhood abuse / parental abandonment is everywhere in fiction, because it's interesting, that's all.

I'm the same way, but the only kind I like is with traumatized male characters who happen to be otherwise really strong people. No other kind does it for me.
