If it's that simple for you, then... do it? Trashy novels don't begin and end with Twilight. I believe in you, anon.

hehe, nice comment x)

Well that beats being unemployed.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. Many a writer gets thinking that from time to time. "If shit sells, then what's the point in making art?" The point is deciding for yourself whether you wanna be the guy who makes art or the guy who shovels shit. The cynics will dismiss it as a case of sour grapes, but really you can't put a price on your integrity. ...Well, actually you can, but the moment you do it's pretty much all over since the aforementioned critics will eat you alive anyway. So basically, since the critics are idiots and you're fucked no matter what you do, you might as well try to write something for yourself you can at least be proud of.

+1

*shrug* I actually have no problem with that mentality. There's clearly people out there who enjoy it, so it's not like it'd be unethical to earn money off them. I also don't think that you 'should' persist in writing what you consider to be high quality. If you see an opportunity for making money from what you would call substandard drivel, that is a valid option and not a selling-your-soul deal.

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
did you know that someone else wrote pretty much the EXACT SAME SECRET about a month ago?

Your "I would write trash for money" isn't an original thing. And is rather poinless as a secret because I bet MOST people would write shit like twilight if it would get them ritch (I wouldn't but that's because I have no desire to be ritch)

[identity profile] runriverblue.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
This. Secrets like this have been posted more than once. Do we really need to keep saying the same thing over and over again?

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Did you know that not everybody reads and follows F!S obsessively?

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the difference is that lady actually thinks her stuff is good, so she probably thinks she's a genuinely talented writer. If you're talented and you purposely write crap and try to sell it, I doubt you'll feel as good if it becomes a big hit.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that S. Meyer? That's a good picture of her.

[identity profile] kyuusei.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I had to read the secret twice just to make sure it was Twilight they were talking about. Only good pic I've ever seen of her...

[identity profile] tei-0.livejournal.com 2010-12-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"The cry 'I could have thought of that' is a very popular and misleading one, for the fact is that they didn't, and a very significant and revealing fact it is too."
--Douglas Adams

Okay then, anon. Write your book. Come back when you're rich.

[identity profile] krazykatcg.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know why everyone hates Twilight and thinks its a piece of garbage that she should not be proud of writing. If I had written that, I would be proud as shit, because I feel good that my books and the movies that spun off my books, have such a huge following.
I'm not saying Twilight is perfect literature, I'm just saying that isn't it all subjective? Some people HATE books that are considered 'the classics', and other people LOVE books that are considered crappy.
Writing inst something that goes up against a set measure that everyone follows and believes in. Its not like there is a scale that goes from Twilight to Shakespeare and if your a writer you try to aspire to writing something thats high up on the scale like Shakespeare. Some people HATE Shakespeare and LOVE Twilight. So I don't know If I'm making any sense, but all I know is, literary opnions are too varied and complicated to try and say "These Opinions Bad. These Opnions Good."

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
As Somerset Maugham said, "there are three rules to writing fiction; unfortunately, nobody can agree on what they are."

However, I do think that something can be said for multiple critics pointing out specific reasons that Twilight is godawful; namely the gaping plot-holes, problematic relationships, and inconsistent and poorly developed characters.

You can still love it regardless, and a lot of people obviously do. But just because a whole bunch of people like it doesn't mean it isn't trashy, trite, and insipid. Just look at Lady Gaga.

Basically, stuff like Twilight is to literature what Hot Pockets are to food.

[identity profile] exova.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you're saying, and it's a good point, but I have to agree with the poster above me: if so many people can agree on the specific qualities that make it crappy, then it's crappy. That certainly doesn't mean it's wrong to like it, but it pisses me off when people try to pass it off as good writing.

[identity profile] krazykatcg.livejournal.com 2010-12-20 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Y'all do make good points. Opinions are subjective, but there IS such thing as well structured writing and then...you know, just kind of fluff (Like Twilight). I just dont think its AS black and white as everyone thinks it is. I don't think the line between Good writing and Bad writing is as distinct as some people make it.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-20 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know what you mean. I would have been in it for just the money though, and written Twilight under a pseudonym. I'd prefer a more respectable form of fame.
