OP here: Thank you all so much.

OP, you sound very much like me a few years ago, and I dare say that it will get better. I used to be "the smart one", and my parents expected so much from me. After school I got into a really demanding university and failed horribly. I felt worse about disappointing my parents than about failing my course. My parents accepted my choice to drop out of this university, but they were very unhappy about it.
A few years later I finished my studies at a more 'normal' university, I have a good (but not extraordinary) job now and am happy with my life. And I'm fairly sure that my parents are happy for and proud of me, even though I didn't turn out to be some sort of genius. Just do what makes you happy, do what's best for you. Your parents will surely realize sooner or later than your happiness is more important than their expectations.
