They gave a lot to make the games friendlier for the older fanbase, adding the abilities and natures to make it more competitive. TBH IDK if I'd play them past the e4 if it wasn't for this, and I don't even play competitively. My boyfriend and I have so much fun creating teams to one up each other.
I don't know, RSE were just boring game wise though, and I think that's why it was my least favorite. Sure it looked nice/awesome geography, but pretty a game does not make. It was cool to have two waring gangs teams, but their premises were stupid. LOL let's add more water/land to Hoenn. NGL I thought it was stupid. and besides, even if the water evaporated through Drought it's eventually gonna rain again anyways...
It can't compete with stealing Pokemon/destroying the world/liberating all Pokemon. It can't compete with the loved older games or how much personality the DS generation games give to all of the NPCs and get the gym leaders more involved in the plot.
It's just that awkward middle child, that everyone kind of forgets about/has an irrational dislike for.
TL;DR I don't hate RSE, I just like the others more.

As much as I love any and all gens of Pokemon and love all the cool new things RSE introduced, I have to kind of agree with this. RSE was the video game series equivalent of puberty. Even the overworld sprites were awkward.
