I started liking anime in the 7th grade. At that point in my life I was OBSESSED with what others thought of me. I had low self-esteem and tried to conform to the standards of "nonconformity". To put it bluntly, I tried to be a "scene kid" and refused to let anyone see me doing things that wouldn't fit with my ~image~. I would borrow manga from the library and hide it in my backpack like I stole it and then read it ravenously when I got home. Hardly anyone knew.

My life got a hell of a lot easier when I realized that I was being stupid by hiding my interests and trying to project an image of myself. I'm in 11th grade now. When someone asks me "Do you like anime?" I say "Yes, I like some anime."
No shame in it. Anyone worth talking to is smart enough to tell you apart from the desu desu fanbrats who like to squeal "PASTAAAAAAAA~~~!!" in the middle of the hall and wear cat ears and put Sonic porn on their binders. (All of those acts have been committed by some anime fans at my school.)
Please get a reality check. You'll enjoy life so much more.

I was a "scene kid" and a hardcore anime fan in high school. The two aren't mutually exclusive, and it wasn't like I got kicked off the guest list at my friends' show because I liked to watch Lupin III in my spare time.

Also, you'd be surprised how many hipsters secretly enjoy anime. Even stuff like Dragonball Z

Problem is if you admit you like some anime to the kawaii desu types they'll never let you go xD

I commented on this one girl who listed among her favorites a few of mine, and I told her that while I enjoyed Vampire Knight, it was completely and utterly too Mary Sue to actually be |good|, she didn't understand and after I explained to her she didn't reply to me anymore xD
