Oh, I didn't want to come off as if I felt the secret is referring to me personally. To me the secret just read, as if OP was assuming the anime fans they know IRL are representative of all anime fans out there. Reading it a second time, I have agree though, that it could also be meant to say they just don't want to be associated with that very group of fans they know IRL and not anime fans in common.

Btw, is "Reading Comprehension 101" some U.S. high school or college test or something like that?

Not exactly. "(Subject) 101" is a (mostly) U.S. expression referring to the most basic level of a subject, and is derived from how freshman-level college courses in the U.S. are typically designated.
