I'm too shy to really be into the youtube bit, but jesus, these people are having fun and doing things they like. They might not be relating to each other the same way you do, but they LIKE IT or they wouldn't KEEP DOING IT. How is this worse for people to do than getting together and watching sports on TV?
You probably think that I'm one of those people who get together with friends and roleplay characters, but actually I'm not. I barely ever talk about my fandoms to people I know, and most of my friends think I'm a little nerdy but mostly normal- but I would give up "seeming normal" in a second if I had friends like your boyfriend's. Cosplay and yard sales and all. :C

Now, I'm never one to say, "Hey, you're too old for that," but the whole of this group consists of college students (and one high-schooler) with terrible grades. A huge majority of their time is spent organizing their weekend events, time they need to be spending studying, doing homework, and getting actual jobs (which none of them have).
Yeah, they're enjoying themselves now. I'll see how much they enjoy it when they're forced to drop outta school due to a lack of tuition money and failing their classes.
So, I suppose what's most embarrassing about these fans is not their activity, but the cost of their hobby.
this is tl;dr, sorry D:
If you don't want to say "Hey, you're too old for that," why are you implying it? Many people in college don't study all day, every day. People do lots of stuff. They socialize, go to parties, go to local events, hang out and shop, go to sporting events, loaf around in the dorms, etc. They do all kinds of things. Non fans aren't "all work and no play" and NOBODY needs to be "all work and no play". People who do nothing but study tend to burn out, and not everybody CAN do nothing but study. Having hobbies is mentally healthy, and sometimes people do need a break from work. You can't criticize the Kingdom Hearts girls for meeting up on the weekends and taking a break from working, unless you criticize, say, a group of friends who wanted to take some time off from studying and go to a local sporting event every week.
Now, all play and no work is no better, and if they want to be in college, then they should take the time to keep their grades up too. But just that they meet up for RP on the weekends is not destroying their academic life. If they're immature and refuse to study even on the days where they don't have anything important planned, then their immaturity is destroying their academic life. But being so into fandom isn't really that related to it. I knew a bunch of people in college who were on drugs all the time and went to late night parties all the time and their grades sucked too. Anything that people use as an excuse not to do the work they have to isn't healthy. But I highly doubt those party people at my college were pretending to be Sora at those parties.
I don't want to attack you personally, because you were nice enough to reply to my comment and not attack ME personally, but from over here it looks like you're judging them not just by their behavior, but by your thoughts on their hobby. A hobby isn't supposed to be something that's super constructive and helpful to the world, even though it can be. As long as someone's enjoying themselves, making it easier for themselves to do the difficult things they need to by giving themselves something that's fun and they love, and doesn't hurt other people, I don't think their hobby is better or worse than others. And I can't help but feel you're judging them a little harder than you'd judge people in similar situations that were spending all their time on something not fandom related.
So, idk, what I'm wondering is, honestly: If a group of people in college raised money for cosplay and met up on the weekends to RP their favorite characters, but raised the money fairly without taking from others, and kept up their grades and the other things in life that needed to get done, would that be okay? Or would you still feel negatively about them?
