I had someone like that in my life once. We talked online every night for four years and now it's been four months since we last spoke. I hope that this never happens to what you have, OP, because it hurts more than you can imagine.

Like any friendship, it will take effort to keep it going. Sometimes life gets in the way. But I'm sure they feel the connection you feel too. Remember, they are spending just as much time investing in this friendship as you are.

You don't have to tell someone directly for them to know their friendship is valued. Although, to keep a friendship going try to find other common interests aside from the fandom or it is bound to fail. Take it from me, the number 1 reason why I lose touch with friends is because we run out of things to talk about and change interests.
