It's bad the game was broken in more than one way. So much, that I never got past the first mission before I bailed out.

Once I realized that using manual saves solved the disappearing-guards issue, rather than the autosaves the game makes, the game worked just fine, 'cept for some nonsense about killing marines in the embassy mission.

Well, then there's the AI issue, the somewhat overly sensitive mouse controls issue...

The AI is pretty dumb, not gonna lie.

The mouse controls issue is partially due to how the game loads its assets. If you turn off texture streaming (which is on by default in every Unreal 3 engine game ever) in certain ini files the mouse issue is 95% fixed.

OT, but is this game worth buying? I'm into those hokey multiple choice story-based games like Heavy Rain and Mass Effect* and I'll put up with crappy gameplay, so... anyone wanna share their vidja gaem opinions?

*yes I know this has more standard gameplay than HR

If you like Mass Effect, you'll like Alpha Protocol despite its bugginess, which seems to affect different people in different ways. I haven't had an issue with the game beyond stuff related to reloading autosaves and one particularly annoying scripting error that can be got around, but some people seem to have plenty of issues.

Only problem I had with Alpha Protocol is the Mass Effect-style conversation wheel is a bit of a crapshoot (bring a guide) and it's also timed, so you gotta be on your toes.

All in all, it worked well enough for me that I'd call it my game of the year. It's basically Metal Gear Solid RPG/third person Deus Ex without the cyberpunk/Mass Effect meets Burn Notice.

Get it for PC if possible, though. A patch came out recently.

This actually makes it sound way better than any of the professional reviews gave it credit for. I'll give it a try then! Ludicrous bugs that you have to sort out yourself with esoteric console commands are almost part of the charm of PC gaming anyway :V

Most of the professional reviews written by Americans tend to focus on what's wrong with the game, because they were expecting perfection. But Obsidian are nothing if not consistent, and the fact that US reviewers have such short memories says a lot about the state of games journalism today.

I've found that reading European reviews like at Eurogamer tends to bring a slightly more balanced viewpoint.
