Stay away. Find reasons. Mostly, just don't be there, but for good reasons - a job near uni, a trip to a friend's house or with a friend to somewhere else, something plausible, reasonable, and actually true. (Make it happen, in other words.) Then manage - making sure they know you're working really hard to do it - to find a way to squeeze in a visit for a few hours one day, before taking off again. (Don't overnight, of course.) Everyone wins - particularly you.
