Just ignore it. Half the words they emphasize are hardly important these days. I'm pretty sure they do it just to look cool?

I don't notice it when I'm reading the comics themselves, but if the emphasis is left as is when a quote is typed up on some website or other, it does look incredibly silly.

Sometimes the emphasis of a word can change the meaning or implication of a sentence. Maybe it's overused in comics, but it's never bugged me.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-04 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
When you say 'Western comics', do you mean 'American comics'? Because I can't recall the same being done in European comics - though that may also have to do with the language, as I read them all in my native language and maybe the original English or French versions are different.

I think that's more a tone-of-voice thing.

I have always wondered why comics do that, too. It mostly just confuses the hell out of me.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I hate this too. It makes everyone sound as if they think all the other characters are incredibly stupid and need all words to be enunciated very clearly, possibly accompanied by wild gesticulation, to ensure understanding. The emphasised words often aren't even important.

[identity profile] saltintheoven.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha! I've always wondered about this, because I can never seem to find a clear pattern. Is it all the proper nouns? The verbs? Every third word?

[identity profile] megu.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that about American comics! It distracts me to death.

[identity profile] ypsilon42.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it too. Especially since often the highlighting doesn't even make sense. Or at least not to me... I really hope, I can learn to ignore it.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one funny secret!

[identity profile] knuddeluff.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they still do that? Guess I haven't been reading as much. Or I tend not to notice.
ext_219784: (do I dazzle you?)

[identity profile] spiderstars.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get the emphasis but to me American comics kinda look wrong without it. At any rate, I find it easy to ignore.

(Also, to my shame, I relied on this convention when I lettered one of my comics; it looks really wrong without it IDEK).

If by "important" you mean "seemingly random", yes.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I HATE THIS. Not necessarily for the reason you gave (although it makes sense to me), it's just SO FUCKING DISTRACTING.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-04 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK, I think the bolding of random words is part of American comics' charm. But perhaps I am alone in thinking this?

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This annoys me also, but not for your reasons. The bolding just seems entirely random and it gave me a headache.

[identity profile] gingeynary.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always thought it was weird how they emphasized the randomest things but I usually don't really notice anymore when I'm reading a comic. I'm so used to it by now that it'd be weird without it, actually.

Also sometimes I like to read comic books aloud and emphasize everything as written for the lulz.

[identity profile] cxrdevil.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this secret would benefit from the top half being re-bolded. I'd suggest

ONE reason why
I NEVER got into WESTERN comics
is because they seem to

Or

one REASON why

the why is like the one word out of those three that is not prettier accented…also it's not important.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-04 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, because "Western comics" are all the same, right? Uhm, yeah.
I have a big collection of lovely American and European comics that have no single word accended. I think you'll find this phenomenon mostly in superhero stuff.

[identity profile] hyena-frog.livejournal.com 2011-01-04 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
DUDE. I don't read comics often, but I was reading Watchmen for the first time yesterday. I was JUST thinking about this. Get out of my brain. Creepin' me out man.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't read much Western comics, but this always bothers me too. They're not even word that you'd naturally put emphasis on while speaking either, but the voice in my head always puts emphasis on them and it just sounds really wonky. A lot of times, the words being bolded aren't even important either.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It used to bug me since I would wonder if I should be stressing the sound of the or other random words in my head that don't seem that important.

It does make for amusing read alongs on skype though. Everyone sounds like Nicholas Cage.
