People believe he last saw her on Christmas while it was clearly New Year's Day. At least that's the way I understood it.

I think they mean, among other things, the line where Kazran is all "how could you pick one last day to spend with your beloved?" and Abigail is all "Christmas day!" -- the interpretation being that Eleven's mournful look there is him thinking of Rose (and seeing her one last time... on New Year's).

Personally I do not think that counts as "blatant" and I doubt it is what Moffat was going for, but it's a vague scene, so I don't think there's anything wrong with people reading into it whatever they want. I've heard, in addition to Rose: Romana, Gallifrey, Donna, River... It's pretty open to interpretation.

Ah, I get it now. I personally would interpret it as all of the above, frankly. Poor dear has had quite a lot of last days with people he cares about.

It's a vague scene, if you want to interpret it as 100% empathy you go right on ahead and do that.

But if someone else wants to interpret it as Romana/Gallifrey/River/Rose/Turlough/Jamie/Reinette/Whoever the F, that is their thing.

Yeah, the doctor has lost a lot of companions over the years. Several much more tragically than Rose. I mean, Rose is still out there very much alive.

LOL, precisely.

I mean, I won't lie, Rose is the first person who came to my mind in that scene, because I do like Ten/Rose and because I am primarily a New Who fan. So I think that is valid, as far as my own personal reading of the episode goes. But I would never argue that that is the only interpretation, or that that is what Moffat had in mind when he wrote the lines (lol @ the idea of that, frankly).

I'm willing to bet it never occurred to Moffat either. The whole Ten/Rose thing was RTD's baby. If anything I should think the Doctor would be thinking of Madam De Pompedour since that's a) one of Moffat's stories and b) much, much more similar to the Christmas story situation, what with the slow path/long path thing going on in both.

He definately pines for Sarah Jane too, on several occasions. I don't see what's wrong with it. i mean, if I had some great companions who I had fantastic adventures with, I'd remember them with a hint of melancholy, too...

No, I meant Ten -- the last time the Doctor has seen Rose was as Ten, on New Year's, in EOT2.
