The few times I've cosplayed, it was out of love of a character. I can't imagine cosplaying from a series I don't care about.

Same here, only with 50+ costumes. Ok, 51 XD And guess what, my cosplay friends have learned by now that I can NOT be puppy-eyed into making costumes of stuff I don't care about. On the other hand, they also know that I'll be a very reliable group member since I actually ::want:: to take part in whatever I have adhered to!

I get making gift art of series I don't know for friendship's sake. I also get gift fics, to an extent. Icons, fanmixes, crafts, photomanips, you name it. But cosplay, as expensive and time-consuming as it is? No. O_o

Yeeeah...if a friend told me "Hey, I want to get together a cosplay group of this series" and I haven't seen it yet, I might try it out and see if I like it. Most of my favorite series have small or non-existent fandoms so I know how happy it'd make me to get a small group going for them. But heck, if it turns out I don't like a series, I'm not going to feel like I have to dress up for it--and I don't think my friends would, either.

But there are people who cosplay characters from series they don't care about or a character they don't like for a group cosplay. Not everyone is the same.

Yup, I personally don't get it but ymmv and all (and cosplay has so many nuances, one can even only be in it for the aesthetics and that's fine too), and those people are usually happy about it. But OP doesn't look like it!

Well I read the secret as if the OP enjoyed the costumes but didn't like the series. But I think I got that wrong.
