Wait, I don't get this being an obvious reference to Rose.

For one it was New Years Day he saw her on, not Christmas.

Second; it was established in SJA that he saw all of his past companions before he regenerated, not just the ones we saw. So I get this being partly about Rose but just as much to the rest of the people he was close to in his long, long, loooong life.

Unless I'm missing something. ^_o

It was established in SJA, yeah, but not in main Who. They aren't really gonna rely on that when it comes to references. Which is a bit of a shame because you get more references to classic who on SJA. And even with SJA taken into account, Rose was the last companion he saw kinda like.... making sure something you really love is the last thing you see before you die, or holding that image in your head sort of thing.

I'm not saying he hasn't been close to others, some more so than others. Some like Jamie and Susan I tend to think he was very close to. Susan cause she was family, Jamie because he was, well, Jamie. And whilst I don't think he ever stops loving them I do think the pain of loosing one probably starts to lessen with time and regeneration, and the loss of Rose is closer and rawer than the loss of the others. There is Donna but their relationship was different and I think that's a different sort of pain, and a different sort of dilema.

It was New Years, yes, but it was a singular day, one celebrated every year and it is around the season and besides, the question wasn't so much about which Christmas Eve you choose to spend that last day with your loved one as it was how do you choose which day is your last? Any day, but the last day.

But even in the main show we also saw him pop by and see Donna, Jack, Martha, Mickey, Joan's granddaughter, Donna and her parents etc. Again, I don't don't really get what makes Rose stand out with them. It wasn't like how he lost her was that tragic either considering being permanently separated is how he's lost a lot of his past companions (or dead in the case of Adric). And with Donna it was like they were platonic soul mates and she forget everything they did together. Surely that's just as, if not more, painful than how he lost Rose.

And thing is, I did ship them at one point years ago and I get why people like them as a couple. But I just don't get why even after all this time after she's gone, she's meant to be this big important thing in his life so much more so than the others. It's like every emotion in the Doctor is supposed to link back to Rose somehow.

Hell, the last person he lost who arguably meant something special to him was the Master. XD

Yeeees.... the but the implication about spending one more day with a person you loved wasn't platonic, it was romantic. And though I agree that Ten and Donna were platonic soul mates as it were (I seriously loved their relationship) it was just that, platonic. And even if Martha had a crush on him, he only felt platonically towards her, same with Mickey but no crush at all and so on.

And how he lost her at last wasn't that tragic, no, and she didn't die like Adric did. But.... hell, he loved her. In the romantic sense. She helped him come back and recover after the Time War. He lost her in a way that almost was death and then got her back... only to loose her again. That is its own sort of trauma.

And like I say, it seemed to me that it was entirely a romantic connotation with the 'last day' thing.

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Again though; is that really confirmed that he loved her? I mean in the real romantic sense. I know he was gonna say "I love you" on the beach but, in the audio adventures, Eight says that to Charley before she even says it and I just get the sense that it was love in the most innocent sense. Not in a "Let's settle down and make babies" sense. Both times. The human Doctor reciprocated those feelings fully because...he was human. :P But I just don't get this whole "Rose was the love of his life" thing.

The dude is over 900 years old, I find it hard to believe that one nice but somewhat obnoxious London girl (again, I liked her but c'mon) was the shining point of his life.

Again, this is really the fault of the show, not against any fans, for putting her on this pedestal while all the other great companions are made out to be no where near as special. RTD tried to make up for that in SJA but it was too little too late. :-/

Well, all the subtext practically shouted it. The people making it certainly seem to read it that way. The giant kiss after 10.5 whispers to Rose what Ten was going to say (which we know is 'I love you') also tends to give it away. There was no way that was platonic or familial.

Charley, I forgot about her cause I was focused on TV cannon and have only heard a few Big Finnish stuff. And from what I heard I'd agree with your placing of her.

I'm not a person who'll think that just because characters are close they're in love (in the romantic sense) with each other, want to jump each others' bones or so on. Even if they regularly proclaim their love fore one another (Boston Legal, oh I miss you) but..... well.

Everything there gave off that it was romantic, from the scripts to the acting, to what the people behind it said to that giant kiss and the sad/mournful look Ten wore whilst it was going on.

I don't think Rose was the only person he's loved romantically, and I think he will fall in love again. Again, there's Jamie *g*. But... Rose wasn't just a slightly obnoxious London girl who started hanging around one day. She's the one right after the Time War. The one who got him honestly enjoying life again and held him to account when he needed it but.... there was something else about her too.

And again, with the pedestal thing you're probably talking about Martha too? I'll agree they could have handled that so, so much better and I don't know what the heck RTD was thinking. It got better with Donna though, and now Amy and Rory. And I still hold out hope for more mentions and maybe cameos of past companions that aren't cut out. Cause they should be mentioned.

Have I said, I'm a big River fan and am so looking forward to this Doctor/River thing that is to come, what ever is that's going to unfold?

[identity profile] lolofielding.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
What's funny with Charley is that the Doctor not only told her he loved her twice (maybe three times I think) but he was also willing to die/be sent to another Universe/have the whole of time and space collapse - just to save her. I dunno if it could be a testament to the Doctor becoming colder after the Time War but I can't see him having done all that for Rose (for instance he doesn't keep the doors open in the vault to save her in Dalek).

I'm really just gonna try my best to accept that I simply don't GET Rose. It's hard being in this fandom but I might as well try. I mean; what was it she did that made him enjoy life? I can't think of any defining moment. The Doctor just seemed to get happier and Rose just happened to be there. Where was the influence? What was her big moment (that had nothing to do with being possessed by the TARDIS)? [/baffled] Ok, leaving it now. XD

I really think the way Martha was treated was appalling and almost made me hate the Doctor in S3. Especially the scene in TSC where they're on the bed and he basically says "Ugh, you're no help, you suck, why can't Rose be here instead?" Douche Alert! Was that meant to be funny? It wasn't, it just made him look like a dick. Yes, with Donna it was a lot better but again we had a whole series that was all about the lead-up to Rose's return with her popping up now and then. So that's four series' that were pretty much about Rose in some way or another. Wow.

Ah I am really looking forward to how this River thing pans out, I must say. Because I have a feeling Moffat is going to stun us and all the lead-up till now won't be for what we expected.

Where was the influence? What was her big moment (that had nothing to do with being possessed by the TARDIS)?

I'm thinking Dalek, actually. I see her as the person who taught the Doctor how to be ... compassionate again, to a certain degree. I don't know if that's the right word, but at the moment, it's the only one that's coming to mind.

For my part, I think Ten and Rose were unhealthily codependent on each other. (I have a theory about the Doctor's personality being dependent on the circumstances of his regeneration, and Rose being present at his regeneration affecting how he turned out ... well, and Tennant said in an interview that Ten basically imprinted onto her, which explains so much when you think about it.)
