It's funny you mention that "everything seemed darker," because I read in a director interview that the new movie was supposed to be (metaphorically) darker. I'm pretty sure the black suits are a visual representation of that.

[identity profile] cheshirecgrin.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, now that you mention it the new outfits would have looked pretty cool if they had had more of the circuitry patterns like the old ones did.

I've got to admit though, if everything had been white as much the old movie I think I would have gone blind. Between that and the glowing anyway.

[identity profile] gully-moe.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting that you mention this, but I was just thinking about the old movie, and the thing I liked most about the original was how the characters in the computer represented a program, and how they acted on what their program was supposed to do. Tron was a security program, and he did was his program told him to. In the new movie, it didn't have that feel to it; that "everyone is a computer program." I mean, how did Clu become evil? What kind of a program did he become? How did this reflect in the outer world? Maybe I wasn't paying attention (I was falling asleep in between some moments), but I just couldn't see it.

LOL off topic I know. I do like the new costumes, but the original costumes didn't make the characters look more computer-like. Hence why I wanted to bring up my thoughts.

I'm just imagining if the film had been in a modern computer system. Shiny white, silver, and transparent things.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to see a Tron story done in 64 GLORIOUS COLORS. Dithering everywhere!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No no, sixteen. Aww yeah.

[identity profile] calaidi.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I have a certain fondness for neon/color-on-black color schemes, so I really loved that they did something different with this movie. I thought Kevin's white clothes were a really nice touch, too, along with all the other refs to the original. (and there were some programs with glow-on-white color schemes...)

Idk, they still felt like programs to me, just...programs of the Internet age?

God, that icon. I am so Zuse's bitch. I never really got WHY he and a few other "programs" were white though? Was that ever explained? Cause I was sitting in the second to front row in an IMAX theater when I saw it, and it's all pretty much just a big painful blur to me.

[identity profile] calaidi.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
Irk? I've loved him since i saw the Derezzed video. He was so much cooler than I expected.

No idea. It's like that in the game too, which is in the Clu-taking-over era, although in the game it seems to be Isos who are white and programs that are black? But it didn't seem to be in the movie, so who knows.

[identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt like that "everything is darker" was a great expression of how badly CLU had corrupted the system.

Also, lolfetishwear.

But mostly the CLU thing.

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It kind of makes sense if you consider that this isn't the same system as the first movie. It's not as simplistic, so there were obvious upgrades to the grid?

[identity profile] spacebabie.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
They said they were going for a dark and edgie feel. The game has changed afterall.

Castor sums it up best.

"Change the scheme, alter the mood. Electrify the boys and girls if you would be so kind."

[identity profile] jianna.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I get you 100%. Everything about Legacy was dark, from the visuals to the themes to the soundtrack. I like the lightness (literal and figurative) of the original so much more.

I enjoyed Legacy and all but it doesn't fill me with the same dorky giggly glee as the original.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think the costumes in the first were really cute, but a little too silly. But that's going by experience watching it a few years ago, rather than watching it in the 80's. The circuits were cool though.

I guess you could compare it to how computers looked then and now. Tron is a chunky computer with blips and bloops. Tron Legacy is... wait wasn't the grid running on a computer that was just as chunky? Huh. Whatever, pretend it's an iphone.

[identity profile] holy-shpootnik.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The grid was running on some super advanced giant touchscreen computer, I thought?
There was the whole scene with Sam wiping off the dust and shit before he got in.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It was like the computer Dillinger used in the first I think. A table combined with a touchscreen keyboard and monitor(???).

I'm just kind of thinking that this was 1989 tech in the movie. Since the first one was a bit earlier, and everything gets more complicated every six months anyways, I guess it makes sense.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a fondness for the original color scheme, but I also like how crisp the Legacy world was.

Ahh, I can't choose! D:

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Simple fact is that most people think neon-on-black looks better than neon-on-white, as a pure aesthetic thing. The black background sets off the color and luminosity as white would not, providing a higher degree of contrast. I agree there should have been some more circuit-like designs, though, that part was always neat.

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I like both, aesthetically, but I prefer the new outfits. I like the darker feel. I like that the lighting stands out more than it did before. Also, I'm attempting a Quorra costume, I'm and really thankful there aren't anymore circuits because I'm on the verge of hanging myself on EL tape.

[identity profile] agent-tomato.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I would have been happy just seeing the old costumes ONCE with modern graphics technology, even if it was just a flashback. While the new look was okay, the complicated circuit patterns would have looked so cool with 21st century CGI.

[identity profile] calaidi.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, i loved the new look, but I was kind of disappointed they went with it in the flashbacks too. The flashbacks didn't take place that long after the first movie. Or they could've showed the transition from old to new or something.

[identity profile] sergeanthowarth.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
The colors bugged me at first, and then I realized that the 1982 Tron looked like a 1982 computer, big and white and 16 color. Tron Legacy looks more like a modern one. My laptop is a sleek shiny black on the outside and it has orange lights, which fits right in with the Tron Legacy world.
