That's great, OP. Activism that's confined to fandom can be useful, but the "movement", so to speak, is still young and faltering, and a lot of the time it falls short of the mark. I'm glad you're finding alternatives instead of just throwing up your hands at activism in general.

2. blablablabla vacuum. meaning, of course, that things in the media do actually affect the people who consume that media to a certain extent. therefore i'd say some amount of our bitching is worthwhile.

IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE AN "ACTIVIST" BOTH IN REAL LIFE AND ON THE INTERNET. i don't know why some people find that so hard to understand! the time i spend on the internet bitching about politics and shit DOES NOT take up that much of my life. and i know plenty of people who definitely qualify as rl activists as well. :<

All this hipster talk reminds me of my art school and this girl in one of my classes the past semester who continuously made fun of herself by calling herself a hipster and such on her blog (we had to make blogs for this class). It really felt like she was trying too hard after a certain point (but then again, it really felt like a lot of people were trying too hard to be unique or making fun of themselves for trying to be unique).
