Guh, did I write this in my sleep? Up till the mini-class part, I could've thought so.

Depressing. :(

Well... just stop putting so much pressure on yourself. Writing, like everything else, comes a lot more naturally when you're doing it for yourself, for fun and just for the sake of writing.
Do that for a while and you will notice how easier it will feel again :)

It's not always about quantity, you know. Quality counts...

I've been afraid of this about myself lately too. I haven't written anything (fic or original) in a LONG time and yet I still call myself a writer. :/

Are you me? Because class part aside I could have totally written this.

All I can say is there's no shame in being a hobbyist if that's what it turns out you are. And that being prolific is not synonymous with being published. I hope you manage to sort out your feelings on the matter. ♥

As much as I love writing, I think I like editing more. I love talking about the components of how a story is put together more than I like talking about my actual plot. Cyclical endings? Yes, let's chat about that! Formatting on the page is one of the loves of my life, and I cannot get enough of the different ways writers can bend grammar to their wills.

I write, but I tend to keep a lot of it to myself because it's not as good as I would hope or it's just too ridiculous to show anyone. But I constantly crave editing. I would throw myself out there as a beta but I don't really know where to do that and I don't have nearly as many writer friends as I wish I did. Maybe that's what you need, anon? A balance of both?

Either way, I don't think the amount you write shows how much you love writing. Poets are just as much writers as novelists and they use far less words. Being a writer means you write, it doesn't dictate the numbers you need to produce in a year.

It comes down to the ability of creating original material. Can you make your own characters and make them as likable and 3 dimensional as fandom characters? If yes then you have something those BNFs don't have. Stick with it and try. You'll probably realize (as I did) that the world of novel writing is ways different than the world of fanfiction writing and eventually you'll reach a point where you will still admire those prolific authors, but are secure in the knowledge that you know some things they don't.

It might be a bit unfair to say that BNFs don't have the ability to make likable original characters. If they are a good fanfic writer, chances are they are capable of making characters that are digestible for the masses on their own. :|

I was thinking about pretty much exactly this today. And other days. And I have even less than you. Oh well.

[identity profile] amusesme.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
There are days you are going to hate being a writer. Days you doubt yourself. Days you think it was all a mistake. Days you can't write anything at all.

Don't give up on it. If you love it, then make it yours. If you love it, that's all that matters.

Also watch this. It's amazing. http://www.ted.com/talks/elizabeth_gilbert_on_genius.html

Writing fanfic made me realize that I no longer wanted to be a writer even though that's what I always wanted to be. People change. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Not being prolific isn't the same thing as not loving writing. One of my professors just released his novel after 10 years of working on it. He's written some short stories in between, but he didn't have a lot of them. Sure, some published authors can churn out two to four novels a year. Some take their whole lives just to write one. That doesn't invalidate your writing. The fact that you've taken the time to study it and work at it shows that it matters to you, so don't give up.
