Because art's not in a bloody vacuum. If we were all happy fluffy colorblind humans it wouldn't be as big of a deal, but we're not. Assumptions about race have implications about the real wordl.

Also Western cartoons have stylized anatomy and at times weird features and they're given real-world races quite often. Just saying.

Well, most of the characters in OP's pic are from fantasy worlds so they're not one of Earth's races...? Except Kenshin and Spike and Team Rocket.

lol, I'd argue Team Rocket's original world is a fantasy one as that world's populated by animals that use various elemental attacks.

I'd also argue for Spike as well seeing as it's Science Fiction (which often gets conflated with Fantasy for good and for bad) and for all we know, the universe won't be ANYTHING like how it's depicted in CB.

I'm probably the only one who thinks of Pokemon as a fantasy world and not Japan, but I was influenced by the dubbed anime before anything else.

I think it's both--a fantasy Japan. But then when they go to Isshu, which is New York, there's no language barrier and everyone still looks the same (Iris has darker skin than most other characters, but her facial features are the same).

Yeah, what the anon above me said. It's like in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Kurogane comes from a Japan, but it's not the same Japan as the world of xxxHolic where we're introduced to him (fuck yeah dimension travel!), for example. Likewise, the first four Pokemon regions are part of a () (fantasy) Japan, but definitely not the Japan we know exists in our world.

maybe next time you should pick out a bunch of characters who are actually supposed to be Japanese for your secret, then, instead of this hodgepodge of characters who largely aren't

I didn't know there were people who argued over the race of naturally green haired people? Unless the anime is very obviously set in Japan or somewhere else, if there's people with natural "uncommon" characteristics I'll just assume it's set in some sort of fantasy universe. I think that's what some Western cartoons do, too.
