Heard it before on all counts, but...

Thank you for acknowledging that gay couples who don't switch also exist. Gay couples who do switch exist ofc! But so many people who are against seme/uke insist that everybody switches and it's just not true. That's all I'm saying.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
^ Same anon as that one, I should clarify. I agree that seme/uke is unrealistic when forcibly applied to every couple ever. Just tired of people insisting that real gay men always switch and from personal experience? No, no I don't.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
While I do think OP just needs to find better porn, I do sort agree that the coupoles who don't switch are rather over-represented in yaoi...

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah they are, and not represented realistically either.

But, I've heard so many people spout "real gay people switch!" like switching is realistic and not switching isn't. And there are a lot of gay people out there who are comfortable in only one role or the other.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but I do not know what these percentages are. Come to think of it, I'd actually be interested in such a survey!

But let's say, for the sake of argument, that half of gay people switch and half don't.

In yaoi, over 90 percent do not switch.

So yes, I can see how those who do switch would be somewhat annoyed.

On the other hand, I can also understand that a writer does have (fetishistic) preference for a certain dynamic in that couple...

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep saying I realize yaoi is unrealistic. I don't like seme/uke stereotypes, and they're not realistic. I agree with you, you don't have to argue with me.

All I'm talking about are the people who say seme/uke is bad because "switching is realistic and not-switching is unrealistic," which is false. That is all.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)

This, so hard. I always eyeroll at the comments on secrets like this when people (who are usually straight) try to get on some sort of high horse about how yaoi is ~*SO UNREALISTIC~*~ because obvs all gay couples totally switch and take turns and stuff!!1!1

Lol, no. Not all of us do.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it usually is an answer to "come on they cannot switch, switchers don't exist" - to which people reply that a lot of rl couples switch. Believe me I've seen a lot of unbelievers in BL and yaoi - not people with a fetish but people who, it seemed, just couldn't imagine a relationship with a switch in it.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen way more "REAL couples switch" than "real couples NEVER switch."

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
And then there's the whole mindset (often from "concerned" straight feminists) of "gay couples who DON'T switch are just being heteronormative and if only they could free themselves from the chains of oppressive gender roles they would magically become switches!"

Once again: lol, no.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be one of them and I can tell you the reason. I sort of automatically assumed the bottom guy would love to be on top, so if he weren't, he was being oppressed or bullied.
Because me, as a woman, would love nothing more than to be a dominant penetrative partner in a relationship, so I couldn't for the life of me imagine someone with a cock not wanting to fuck their partner through the mattress and rule the relationship with an iron fist. Like... you are a man, why don't you use your privilege everywhere you can?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you know that that belief was incorrect now? Or at least I hope you do.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah... no. Not to mention that your former perspective totally ignores lesbian D/s relationships in which there is a strictly defined top and bottom.

At least you've seen the errors of your ways, anon; that's a step most people can't make :)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Please tell me you don't also assume all hetero relationships are inherently male-dominated.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah quite the opposite, I assumed if a female were not dominant, it meant she was being oppressed by her male. Because who wouldn't want to be dominant?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-05 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The whiteknight types are the worst, that insist that NO!!!!11 Seme/uke is false! Stop trying to fit him into the uke role!!1 This character is masculine enough to top!!!1!1 and are completely thinking along the lines of topping=masculinity and bottoming=femininity anyway.

Thirded. Why can't we accept that there is diversity in gay relationships? Some switch, some don't. -_- It's personal preference.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-06 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same in any relationship... hetero or queer. I think the majority switch but of course there are those that are interested in a sub/dom relationship. Sheesh, fandom.

[personal profile] clawdine 2011-01-06 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah ahaha I meant that like hetero relationships, gay ones are diverse as well.

I dunno about "majority" though, I think the numbers might be more equal. :)

Andrej Pejic, he's a fashion model from Australia, biggest hit of last year during fashion week season. :)

[identity profile] pkbitchgirl.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He's got a bit of a Bowie thing going there

I've a bit of a thing for really pale guys with white hair ATM, I think Prince Nuada and he's got a bit of a Wraith from Stargate Atlantis thing going.

I wonder if Andrej will get offered a role as an elf in The Hobbit?
clawdine: Jiling (Andrej: pretty in pink)

[personal profile] clawdine 2011-01-16 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
*grin* I've had a huge thing for pale guys/light-coloured hair since young. And I was just looking at Prince Nuada the other day. XD

He'd be a very pretty, very lithe elf.

I just want to add that even not every BL manga has the same characters. How "uke" or "seme" behave is not etched in stone, neither are the heigh rule or hair colours. Sure, several popular works follow the known stereotypes, but just as often you just find two guys, one of them happens to top and one of them happens to bottom, sometimes the role changes with other characters, and sometimes you can also find pairings that switch. It's not one way to rule them all. ;)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Not arguing, simply discussing :)
