I agree to some extent. I like it when graphics look nice -- like, I enjoy the graphics from Tales of the Abyss, and FFX isn't too bad -- but I agree COMPLETELY about the ultra-realism. FFXIII squicked me the hell out for that very reason. I can't play it. Sure, it's pretty, but it's pretty in the sense that it looks extremely realistic, and makes me feel like I'm controlling a person rather than a character. I want to be able to look at the game characters and think that I'm playing with dolls, not people.

So, I agree with you, definitely.

It's not the people for me, it's - somebody said it downthread, but when things get TOO REALISTIC... well, reality is usually drab and boring! I'd much rather play something colorful and quirky like Earthbound than Golden Sun (which was a good game, but the "more realistic" graphics did nothing for me)

Really? I didn't think the graphics in Golden Sun were realistic at all -- especially with all of the anime-style and emoticon replies. xD But hey, to each their own! Considering how unpopular my opinion on FFXIII's graphics tend to be, I am not one to talk. xD

But yeah, I agree on that point, too. I play video games to escape reality, not immerse myself in it. If I wanted to immerse myself in reality, I'd put down the game and go . . . I don't know . . . sit in on a city council meeting or something. xD

Oh, not the characters, I meant the backgrounds and scenery, HAHAHA. The general art style was trying to be realism with cartoony characters and it was GOOD... but just did not work at all for me - like Earthbound realized it was cartoony and just went full force with it and was awesome

Oh, I see what you mean now! =D Hahaha, yeah, I totally get that. :) Sadly, I've never had a chance to play an Earthbound game, though I've always wanted to ever since I first played as Ness in SSB. :( They're just super hard to find -- I've never been able to get my hands on one.

Speaking of cartoony graphics that the fanbase hated on, it sort of reminds me of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Those graphics were beautiful, but everyone hated all over them because they were cartoony. xP Personally, though, despite the fact that Majora's Mask is my favorite game in the series, I think that Wind Waker has the best graphics in Zelda to date (though Skyward Sword is definitely going to give it a run for its money).

And yeah, I preferred Wind Waker graphics too. I really love Twilight Princess, but - I don't know, the realism gives games a more serious feel, I guess, even when they're trying NOT to be serious. There's a difference between like... cartoon humor and live-action sit-com humor... or something idek

I don't mind ultrarealism, and done well I can get really pulled into the immersion of it.

In turn, I usually have a blind spot when it comes to dated graphics. Some of my favourite games are fashionably ugly. My few exceptions usually tend to be certain early 2000s games where the games were in this weird spot where they were ugly, yet were trying to be realistic. A good example of this is Battlefield 1942. No game that ugly should take that long to load, and the maps were so plain and uninteresting and it was pretty clear the primary design philosophy was LET'S JUST BUILD HUGE MAPS WE CAN FUCK AROUND IN VEHICLES ON
