Sunako is much more of a Mary Sue. I mean, let this plain girl's hair down and she becomes drop dead gorgeous? That's like, classic Mary Sue.

See, here's the thing in my opinion. Sunako was never plain. She just didn't realize it.

Though admittedly I've never finished the series so I could be wrong.

She wasn't. It's just that her looks weren't up to her former crush's taste, so she took that standard and thought of herself as ugly. It's exemplified during an outing with her classmates- she catches her reflection and sees a very ugly girl.

Then there was the time Ranmaru talked an actress into faking a reflection for Sunako, and Sunako was really surprised that she was that pretty.

Well, I figure it was a combination of the following:
1. Sunako doesn't look into a real mirror very often, so she doesn't know what she looks like, roughly.
2. She was a very good actress who managed to imitate Sunako's poses so completely that Sunako really thought it was her reflection.
3. Frosted glass (yes, really) to hide other discrepancies, and a great deal of suspension of belief.
