--Death and murder run rampant. The Deku Butler's son was murdered by Majora at the very beginning of the game to turn Link into a Deku Scrub. Darmani was killed trying to save his people from the frozen wasteland Majora placed upon them. Mikau was murdered by the pirates as he tried to rescue his children's eggs. Pamela gets eaten by her zombiefied father if you don't reverse his curse. The monkey gets boiled alive for the kidnap of the princess (who is thusly killed by Odolwa) if you don't clear out Woodfall. Koume most likely also dies in the forest, given that she was injured you didn't bring her a potion to heal her. And, on top of all the people that die if you don't save them? If you try to stop Sakon the thief from robbing the old woman of the bomb shop by shooting him with an arrow, the bombs explode, he dies, and you don't get rewarded. Link can actually take the life of a human being in this game . . . all by accident. Doesn't stop the blood from staining his hands, though.

--Someone up-thread mentioned the Happy Mask Salesman's eyes if you don't give him money. Um . . . Try having him flip the fuck out when you tell him you didn't get Majora's Mask back after the first three day cycle. Or the fact that he remembers each three day cycle, when the only other people to do so were Link and Tatl. Or the fact that he just laughs and says, "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?" if you let the moon crash. Or how he literally just vanishes at the end of the game, once he has the mask back. Or the fact that all of the children in the moon world look just like him . . .

--Majora's/Skullkid's scream when you confront him on top of the Clock Tower. After Tael gives you the warning, he says, "Well, whatever. It doesn't matter if they come now. Just look above you . . . If this is something that can be stopped, then try and stop it!" I mean, that's just from memory so the wording probably isn't exact, but that doesn't stop the fact that he lets out this inhuman noise right before the game starts in with a scare chord, the moon suddenly hurtling toward the earth even faster than before.

--The transformation masks have the souls of the deceased sealed inside them. You then get to take on their bodies and use them for your own devices. Oh, and Majora's Mask is really just possessing the Skullkid, manipulating the things that hurt him the most to wreak havoc. And Skullkids, remember, are just children/Kokiri who were lost in the Lost Woods for just a little too long . . .

--It STILL creeps me out to play the game in the dark and listen to this theme music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ_BQX88g0k

Ocarina of Time has Nightmare Fuel, but Majora's Mask ramps it up to the High Octane level, IMHO.

I agree with everything you've said, especially since a few weeks ago I replayed the game for the first time since I was 13 and remembered just how much MM made me shiver and tear up.

Another thing that makes this game so creepy [and I love it for that actually] is this theory I read recently about Majora tricking Link and the Happy Mask Salesman by sealing its spirit into Fierce Deity's Mask. Right here - http://zelda.wikia.com/wiki/Fierce_Deity Sure gave me some chills, man.

I... think I adore you. You've just listed almost every reason I love MM and some things I didn't even realize.

I'll be in my bunk with my copy.

Thanks.

... I think I love you a little bit. No, really.

Though, I have to admit back when I played it before someone, IDEK who, stole my expansion pack for the N64 I was actually never creeped out by the story, but much rather by the monsters, just like in OoT.

It's just as I've gotten older that I've realised just how messed up MM really was. And I'm just wondering, when you stop the moon and defeat Majora, does that save everyone? It shouldn't, considering that you weren't there to help them during the three day cycle since you can't help everyone. (I'll have to admit I never got to finish the game because of said theft).

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever stole your expansion pack needs to be punched in the face.

As for saving everyone, it really depends. Marginally, the entire world is saved because the moon is gone, and it's implied that the Dekus, Gorons, Zoras, and Clock Town residents will -- for the most part -- be all right. The end credits are basically a montage of everyone enjoying life now that the world is over, but small details can be changed. Like -- and I could be wrong about this, it's been a long time since I played the game to completion -- if you don't reunite Kafei and Anju during the same three day cycle that you beat the game, I think that Kafei doesn't show up to the wedding (whereas if you do, then the camera is seen from his point of view at the end of the aisle during their wedding). I could be wrong about that, though.

And then, of course . . . Regardless of what you do, at the very end of the credits, Nintendo threw in a downer ending and had the Deku Butler crying by the twisted tree you pass in the very beginning of the game -- his son. It's like a kick to the gut after everything else. Thanks for that, Nintendo.

Yeah, and I haven't been able to figure out who did it either (so I figure I'll have to buy a new one...). Because that's not something you lend someone, and I didn't even know where the thing you use to remove it was, I found that a long time after the expansion pack disappeared. I was in the last temple when it happened too... :/

Maybe it means that if you destroy Majora's mask, most of the evil he's done is destroyed as well, not just the moon. But even so, it wouldn't change that the thief stole Kafei's mask, as that happened before Skullkid turned him into a child, right? So you would need to complete their quest and get the Sun's Mask back to have him show up at the ceremony. Makes sense. *nods*

Ooouch, that is a kick in the gut. Like "Here, you've just saved the world and things are mostly alright, but this guy's kid is still dead."

I kept wondering the same thing for ages! It's bad enough going around doing quests and knowing meanwhile a little girl is being kidnapped and traumatized by aliens, a couple aren't being reunited, a little girl has a zombie for a dad etc and you can't help them all at once. But ending the game and thinking those people you didn't help still have their problems... :-/ I guess the reasoning is supposed to be everything Link did came true, in all the many 3 day cycles.

And O HAI again. <3

Or, as I said about (mostly just me guessing) it could be that since most of these problems were caused by the mask... destroying it also destroys most of the evil things it made happen. And because of that, things get resolved... mostly.

HAI! Fancy seeing you again~ <3

Love this comment (er, comments). Majora's Mask is scary enough as it is but when you really analyze it it's extremely fucked up.

Also holy shit, Pamela gets eaten by her father if you don't reverse the curse? D: Jesus Christ, I didn't know that. Now I'm even more terrified and going to make sure that NEVER happens to her if I can stop it while I'm playing. Didn't know the bit about Sakon either. He's an asshole but I wouldn't want to kill him. O_o

You know, I understood most of that game, but...somehow never totally got that Lulu's kids were Mikau's. (I guess I was just too young when I played it, although I think I got most of it...) Now I feel awful for her. :(
