I will never understand the weird hate this site gets. Have I found crap on it? Oh my, yes. Have I found seriously stellar fic that I haven't seen anywhere else? Yes, emphatically.
It's neat and organized. I'm a wee bit neurotic, so I like neat and organized. Your fandom doesn't have a community (or the comms you can find are balls out crazy and you'd rather not participate, you just want to read some fic)? There's still some fic. You like a specific pairing? Narrow it down to two characters and a genre. Like a writer's style? Click their profile page to get a nice, neat list of everything else they've done.
Yes, you don't need ff.n to do all these things. Anyone reasonably competent with the internet can do more or less the same thing for themselves. But a lot of people (including yours truly) don't feel like putting in the effort. I just want to write stories and post them. If I'm part of a comm I like, the story will probably get posted there first, but eventually, it'll find its way over to ff.n.
It's a good site. Sturgeon's Law applies, but if I just feel in the mood to read a very specific type of fic for an obscure or small fandom, I like my odds better on ff.n than trying every form of google I could think of.
