Diana Gabaldon compared fanfic writing to supporting white slavery (in a really shitty analogy, but apparently it made sense to her), so yeah, inside joke.

She said that she feels that people writing fanfic about her characters is like selling her children into white slavery.

Its also like creepy neighbours sending stalkery letters to her daughter, or women openly lusting after her husband, or growing pot in her backyard.

Also, she thinks it's immoral and she ~~knows~~ it's illegal.

So yeah, inside joke, definitely, but not of the funny kind unfortunately.
