15. It's just part of the natural trend of games getting prettier and shinier. You really couldn't see a game like...uh...FFX with beeps and boops, right? And actually, if my hearing isn't failing me, a lot of game developers use synthesizers instead of orchestras. :3
I don't agree that orchestra music can't be game music. It's like saying classical music has to be played on a piano and playing it on a different instrument wouldn't make it "classical" anymore.
For me, it depends on the tune, not the medium. Songs like "Frog's Theme" will be awesome no matter how it's done. Songs like "Panic" from Xenosaga Episode I can go die. That music will be annoying and loud and make you rip your hair out whether the London Philharmonic or a guy on a keyboard does it. (But I love the rest of the XS music. Episodes II and III have beautiful tunes.) I don't care if it's synthesized, beeps, or a live orchestra. If the tune is good, and it fits the overall mood of what it's supposed to represent, then I'll like it.
