15. Same here! Seems like everything is really bland orchestral work these days... Like it's orchestral just for the sake of being so, perhaps to make the game seem more epic.

I find far more older games have genuinely good, catchy music! I love stuff I can hum along to the most.

katsu: (My muse is Rukia's butt)

[personal profile] katsu 2007-05-29 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Having read both comics and manga, there's a reason all my money's going to manga instead of comics. While some comics have lovely art (and some manga has sucky art) and some comics have good plot (and some manga has no plot), I'm sick of the utter misogyny of the comics industry as a whole. Manga's certainly not perfect (Bleach is the first manga ever that I've read that didn't involve at least one female character that made me want to rip my own eyes out) but I feel it's doing a better job. I've read some pretty well researched essays regarding how the comic industry's pretty much engineered its own downfall by continuing to ignore female readers, which is where manga got its huge boost.

It would be a really interesting topic for a paper, though...

Re: #13

[identity profile] kimirike.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate how people say that comics are geared towards men. They are, in personal point of view, the creation of the artists and story writers. They put the comics in bookstores for EVERYONE to see, read, and purchase. There is no label saying 'Men only'. Comics are read by men mostly because they are written by men, but nothing stops a girl from picking up a comic.

And about the whole comic industry engineering its own downfall what the heck is that supposed to mean? What are comics artists supposed to do? Quit writing about male super heroes and focus on teenage girls? They obviously prefer to write and draw action so how is that engineering its own downfall? They are drawing what they want to draw and they shouldn't be forced to draw something else just to bring in a specific audience because it brings in more cash. That would just be stamping out the artist's freedom.

1 & 2. IAWTS ♥

13. Manga just seems to have a different... I don't know what to call it. A different feel? Some people are attracted to that. More people are attracted just because it's foreign and thus cool. It's sad that the Western comics are dying out, yeah, I don't think they'll die entirely--it's going to take a lot to kill something like Marvel. The anime era will pass, people will start buying comics again.

(I think that's actually American fanart by the way.)

6 - You had a crush on a cartoon dog?

11 - Descriptivism. Look it up.

13 - I think manga appeals to a slightly different audience to Western comics, so I don't know if its popularity is really to 'blame' for a downturn in comics sales. You have to take into account things like internet piracy as well.

13. It's not just manga getting more popular, it's that so many american comics these days are either crap or not marketed well enough to find a huge audience. if manga is crap(and most of it is, in my opinion, just like american stuff) it's crap that found a better foothold in the market right now. Hopefully the manga fad will even out and soon there will be an equal amount of manga and american comics and comics from (GASP) other countries in bookstores.. i hope..
Japanese comics AND American comics both need to step it up as far as quality. Akira and Cromartie High School, The Goon and Fables.. These are HARDCORE EXCELLENT, but comics in general are getting dumbed down more every day..

[13] I wouldn't say it's dying myself. To be perfectly honest as much as I enjoy manga there aren't many series out there that are very interesting. I collect maybe... four/ five series? These days I've been going back to the comics, mostly DC, and reading what I've missed. In the end I would have to say comics have a better appeal than manga would. But that's just my personal viewpoint on it.

[identity profile] liyu.livejournal.com 2007-05-30 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I collect maybe... four/ five series?
o____o!! That must be terribly taxing on your pocket... or is it? Vertigo's The Sandman and Lucifer made me mostly-broke.

Personally, I spend no money on manga (free online viewing, whoops?) and hundreds on comics - well, maybe it's because of Neil Gaiman.

Also 19: Haha bitter. I ship Seph/Aeris but that's because I'm into weird pairings. I don't call it SOOOOOO CANON or anything, I just think it's fun to write and read.

Pairing wars are so overrated :[

[identity profile] byewonderland.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I never quite understood the point of pairing wars. Everyone has their favorites and it's not like it'll be the end of world if one pairing is canon while the other isn't. Admittedly there is only one pairing ever that has bothered me, but it's not like the world is gunna go KA-BOOM because of. D:

I'll agree with you. I love the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, and a few tracks from FF6, but most of FF6, the earlier FFs, other games from that era, I'm really not enthralled by.

13.) I SEE LONDON I SEE FRANCE, I SEE SUPERMAN'S UNDERPANTS YAY!

21.) Agreed.. the yuri is the best part of that series. In the manga, it doesn't really hide it, does it. *sighs happily*

15. It's just part of the natural trend of games getting prettier and shinier. You really couldn't see a game like...uh...FFX with beeps and boops, right? And actually, if my hearing isn't failing me, a lot of game developers use synthesizers instead of orchestras. :3

I don't agree that orchestra music can't be game music. It's like saying classical music has to be played on a piano and playing it on a different instrument wouldn't make it "classical" anymore.

For me, it depends on the tune, not the medium. Songs like "Frog's Theme" will be awesome no matter how it's done. Songs like "Panic" from Xenosaga Episode I can go die. That music will be annoying and loud and make you rip your hair out whether the London Philharmonic or a guy on a keyboard does it. (But I love the rest of the XS music. Episodes II and III have beautiful tunes.) I don't care if it's synthesized, beeps, or a live orchestra. If the tune is good, and it fits the overall mood of what it's supposed to represent, then I'll like it.

FUN FACT: Animaniacs used a live orchestra for every one of its episodes.

16. I can't help but want to side with the 15-year-old (though I realize from your secret that she's already started problems drama). :x I started RPing in large games when I was fourteen, and even though I wasn't the best writer, I was still frequently thought to be several years older than I actually was, because I didn't do retarded things that started drama. I know I was the exception instead of the rule, but it still pissed me off when people dismissed me out of hand because of my age.

17. AGREED. However, I can't help but like the fact that we're getting to see more of Sephiroth before he went crazy. And, hey, at least Sephrioth kept his butt out of DoC. Kinda.

... if it helps, you can see that Angeal actually has two wings. One is just smaller and set lower than the obvious one.
