As someone who has a trigger that can leave me a complete basket case, I will tell you that I'm very careful about checking movies and books and TV shows for things that might trigger me before I actually watch/read them. Most good review sites will mention things like this in their reviews, but I also ask friends/family members on their impressions before I read/watch something.

Fanfiction doesn't always have those options. While I do have friends who I can occasionally ask for an opinion of something if I think it might contain something triggery, there are fandoms I read fic in that none of my friends are interested in being a part of. So for me, warnings on fics are the best way for me to know whether something might cause me a problem.

I don't watch movies the day they release. I don't read books the first day they go on sale. I watch TV in reruns. I do take responsibility for myself and my own issues. All I'm asking is that people who write fanfic be considerate enough to provide me with the tools I need to do that.

What are your thoughts on yaoi very general warnings, like "may contain triggering material"?

(Not trying to snark you here, I'm genuinely curious since I know some people absolutely abhors warnings that 'vague.')

Honestly, I'm perfectly fine with that, because it's enough to let me know there may be something in there that will be a problem for me. At that point I can either move on to another fic, or I can sweet talk one of my friends into checking for me to see whether the issue is going to hit my trigger. I probably miss out on reading some really good stories that wouldn't have been a problem, but that's better than spending hours falling apart because I unexpectedly read something that gave me flashbacks.

god I fucking hate that comment when people try to pull that sort of passive-aggressive emotional blackmail bullshit.

yeah, she probably does. so do many people who decide not to read any fic because they don't like the pairings or the summary or the author in general.

trust me, buttercup, there's PLENTY of fic out there. our reading experience is not that much poorer just because there are those of us who choose to be a little more discriminating in what we read, so don't you worry your pretty little head about it.
