Speaking as a Sherlock who had to give up entirely on opening up to his family before he even stood a chance of finding his Watson, much as this is well-intentioned advice it really doesn't always work. Sometimes your family actually can't help or consists of people whose response to looking deeper would be 'augh WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU'. & after growing up in that kind of family it can take a long time to learn how to open up to anyone again.

But there are Watsons out there; I've found mine, and it turned out he was looking for a Sherlock, too - who knew? Good luck, OP.

Heh, so true. Above Sherlock notes that at the happiest point of my life, my mother was telling me that I was clearly clinically depressed. No matter how many times I tried to explain that I was living alone and not going out with friends anymore because spending my time on art actually satisfied me, unlike spending it on tedious social obligations, she kept telling me how much Prozac helped her and that I should try it.

(Having now met my family, my Watson is not at all surprised that I turned out so... Sherlockian. Sometimes family is an explanation rather than a solution for one's issues.)

It is genuinely both comforting and weird to know there's more than one of us out there, if you see what I mean. & yes, that, about my family, too. My father is also a bit of a Sherlock, but also just basically kind of a dick. :|

I'm glad you have your Watson too. I read your comment above - seven years is too long for it to be a penance, any John worth their salt would get sick of their own self-pity around year two if that were the case. If she's stayed with you for seven years I'm afraid it's probably something good. Sorry :)
