You can still watch a show and not be in fandom. I've been watching Supernatural from the very first episode - six glorious years with the ups and downs of the series but not once did I feel the urge to get involved in fandom.
So basically a watching and loving a show doesn't have mean you *have* to be in fandom.

I'm really REALLY new in the SPN fandom. And relatively new to the series, too! I know the fandom is infamous, but-- I'm just interacting very very slowly, mainly observing in the beginning, by now I've even done some watchalongs with some really fun SPN fans here on LJ so.. I think it's definitely worth to give it a try!

There are some reeeally nice SPN fans out there, anon! :)

But the things that drive you crazy in your old fandom may not apply, or be accepted differently in Spn fandom, so the reactions may make you laugh.

The SPN fandom is awesome, I've never had a better time on the internet. I honestly don't understand why anyone would be scared to join in just because there are a few crazy fans out there. Like it's been said many times before, the majority of SPN fans are capable of holding intelligent conversations and participating in friendly debates. Not everyone in this fandom is insane. I mean, yes, there is crazy flailing and lots of SDFGHJKSASDFGHJKL, but it's not like we SPN fans do that shit all day errday, just when awesome shit happens. :D And it's not you even have to get into the fandom, you can just enjoy the show and not worry about what's going on on the internet.

A shining example of how batshit the SPN fandom can be (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/622758.html?thread=392477094#t392477094) - even though it is almost certainly trolling in this instance, there are people who would actually get that done.

I've been in love with SPN since it started airing though, and I just avoid fandom. My only real contact with it is through f_s, where I generally decide that I made the best decision to avoid fandom.

The show is awesome, but we do seem to have a disproportionate amount of crazies.

Yeah, this was my attitude when I got into SPN, though I don't usually do more than read and post fic, and as long as you stay away from skeevy, racist Big Bang stories, that isn't really wanky.

ontd_spnparty is usually non-wanky, though, and it can be a lot of fun :D

This. I'm not very active in the SPN community either, but the spnparty is generally a lot of fun and it's easy enough to avoid the more batshit parts of fandom (i.e. I stay far far away from anon communities).

Seasons 1 and 2 of Supernatural were AMAZING. Season 3 was short and fairly good, season 4 was half assed, season 5 was less than stellar and season 6 has been absolute shit (seriously, like BAD fanfic come to life). Fandom is full of nutbars, self-centered assholes and morons. You're better off not getting involved in fandom. I was and got out of the show and the fandom. I am thankful everytime I see someone bitch about the show now because as I said, season 6 is just fucking shit.

mehhh whatever dude, Supernatural is a tasty fun show and the fandom is awesome and hilarious and fun and yes, kinda crazy but not in a BLARRRRGH FIGHTING way (except in a few circles, and you can generally tell where the wank is), in a HOLY SHIT THAT WAS SO AWESOME I'M GOING TO WRITE ALL KINDS OF CRAZY FIC ABOUT IT way. And you can always watch the show and not get involved with the fandom (though you should. Seriously. The show is great, but the fandom is this grand sweeping experience - I'm relatively new and only on the fringes and I'm still just delighted by it. DON'T BE AFRAID! I'm not in Twilight fandom and never was, but from what I heard it's not much like SPN fandom. I'd compare it more with Harry Potter actually, but less wanky, though some wank does exist.)

You can still watch a show and not be involved in fandom. Or even just only be involved at a level where you only look at art and/or read fic and join comms specific to stuff you actually like about the show and ignore wanky posts. That's what I do most of the time.

I mostly just stick with the tumblr SPN fandom, they're insanely awesome and fun there. I mean, I found the SPN fandom there before I ever even WATCHED SPN and I loved it so much that it convinced me to watch the show. (I was on the fence about watching it before.)

It can be worse than the Twilight fandom - if you head towards the batshit and wankery. I'm happily involved in Fandom and though my Flist is waky, it is in a fun and wank-free way. Then again, I'm lucky like that, lol! It can be a good fandom - but you don't have to be IN Fandom to enjoy Show, OP.
