it's ok to use it if you're writing from the POV of someone who doesn't know that characters name, because then it makes sense that the narrative would focus on a person's appearance to identify someone. aside from that, no.

I like this (http://trickster.org/arduinna/epithet.html) as a guide for when to use epithets, which suffice to say is a lot less than they're actually used in far too much fic.
