I'm not woe is anyone and while I understand that you're not trying to insult me I'm currently extremely angry and telling me that I'm just being too negative is not going to make me less angry.

You know what's lacking? Women. Gay men. Gay women. People of any gender and sexuality that isn't cis and straight. And do you know why I'm focusing on it? So that people will fucking pay attention to it. You can't just say "Oh, well we have some strong women on TV now, so we don't need to worry so much" and hope that everything will be hunky dory. Because the things that are starting to improve will still need improvement and the things that we're lacking need to actually have attention paid to them.

The things we see in the media are important. They normalise things, which is why homosexuality, and bisexuality, and transgendered people and even women are still 'not normal'. They don't get representation, and the representation they do get is often stereotyped at best and completely false at worst.

I get that you get my point, but I need to make it clear as to why I'm so angry. These things are important, you can't just brush it aside because you think it doesn't really concern you, or that it isn't really an issue anymore.

I'm not so sure it's a lack of women exactly.

I see plenty of women on my TV.

It's more like, lack of variation in women, as I feel a lot of women/girls on TV are basically the same character type in different incarnations...if that makes sense?
A type that whole segments of the population do not even identify with...

This. I see plenty of women on TV, but most of the time they're barely a character and all seem to come in variations of boobs, look at my parted lips I'm helpless and can someone please get a man to save me.

Even if the female is 'spunky' and seems strong to begin with it normally somehow falls into the 'a man is finally saving me' or more classic 'btw I have daddy issues'. It's BORING, and I'm tired of seeing actresses that seem to primarily be attempting to constantly pose for a moving photograph for Harry Potter universe Myspace.

That's an important distinction to make and thank you for making it. I was too angry to think about it at the time.

ilu for this comment

thanks for clarifying. I'm a trans guy who would like representation in media, but feels guilty about it because trans men are still men and thus already overrepresented.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel guilty about wanting representation, because you aren't represented. You shouldn't have to be satisfied with just seeing cis-gendered men and having to say 'well I guess they're men and I'm a man so it's okay' even if no one is willing to deal with the fact that there are different kinds of men, oh my god call the Pope the world is ending.

Wow, television makes me angry.

Okay, this comment is totally late because I didn't get around to read this thread until now, but I am wondering if you are familiar with Degrassi: The Next Generation? One of the current characters (entered only this past season, the tenth one) is a transman named Adam (*points to icon for a visual*). Though I'm not trans myself and can't judge for certain, I feel the character is done really well. They do a good job of both focusing on trans issues and just writing the character as a full person outside of that identity. You could start from season ten, I'm sure that the story will probably makes sense anyways, with maybe a little reading on Wikipedia.
