I'm just going to leave this here.
"White-armed Hera", or the "cow-eyed queen".
"But my heart is torn for wise Ulysses, unfortunate man, who far from his friends has long been suffering afflictions in a sea-encircled island, where is the navel of the sea.
It's a wooded island, and there resides a Goddess, daughter of Atlas of baneful mind, who knows the depths of every sea, and himself holds the tall pillars which keep earth and heaven apart.
It is his daughter who keeps back that wretched, sorrowing man; and ever with soft and wheedling words she charms him that he may forget Ithaca.
But Ulysses, in his longing to see were it but the smoke leaping up from his own land, wishes to die.
Yet your heart do not regard it, Olympian. Did not Ulysses beside the ships of the Argives offer you sacrifice without limitation of supply or effort in the broad land of Troy?
For what reason then did you conceive such wrath against him, O Zeus."
So yeah, Homer used this terrible indicator of bad writing a lot. Granted, that's epic poetry. Still.
Re: I'm just going to leave this here.
It's similar to how Jesus is called "The Prince of Peace" or even "Christ," which really means "The Anointed One" or whatever. It's to give poetry, and scripture, and myth, a literally epic and larger-than life emotional resonance.
It doesn't work for when you're referring to Sam Winchester in an incest porno fanfic.

Relevant link is relevant. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAwesome) (TVTropes, so don't click if you've got anything else you need to be doing.)
Re: I'm just going to leave this here.
... seriously though, I'm just noticing this. Why is Hera "Hera" there instead of Juno and Zeus "Zeus" instead of Jupiter but poor Odysseus gets stuck with the lame-o Latin moniker?
Is this the superior Robert Fitzgerald translation or are we reading an unacceptable OTHER version here >:c
