If by "the point", you mean Anno's state of mind and wonderful budget money. NGE isn't as deep as you think it is. It's fun, but it's not so clever that viewers are going to miss important details. However, they can get frustrated by it. My little sister dubbed those latter episodes and monologues in the train as acid trips. You sound like those people in Lost fandom that can't understand why a lot of people were unsatisfied with the finale to that.

It's not hard to get.

As far as the rebuild movies go, I like them. They're like alternate endings, routes, or just plain re-tellings. Like the manga. Oh, how I wish more people read the manga.
