It's an comedy and an old one, but Golden Girls is a good show that features on sexually active (in a mature non-"eww they're old and having sex aren't they groooossss" way) older women. I agree with this secret though, it'd be nice to have people who weren't just there to fill in the "Old Wise Guy" trope.

I agree. It would be a great chance of pace.

So you want older people in roles because of their perspective and wisdom... but not in the wise mentor roles? I get what you're trying to say but it's reading a little funny to me.

I agree anon. We need more variety nowadays, and not just when it comes to sexuality and race. I'm totally with you.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of the reason might be that many authors and TV writers are not that old themselves and don't know how to write that perspective. Obviously not the whole reason, but you see what I'm getting at.

Well, there's still Fringe. For now.

It'll probably change in the next decade or two, OP. For the first time in human history, by the end of the decade we'll have more people over 65 than under 5. That we'll have an older population is surely to be reflected in our mass media and popular culture.

[identity profile] streetcake.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP, especially about the unique perspective part.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Sex and old people are combined quite handily in some fandoms (Tron, Metal Gear Solid...)

[identity profile] hulkenberg.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I overlooked all the sexism in Walking Dead just for Dale - he was great, totally badass and an old guy without it being like omg he can't do anything oh no he's so frail and ancient but he's a ~father figure~

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
All depends on the story you're trying to tell.

Oh hell yeah! (And now I want to see "The Mist...")

I love it when shows and movies focus on someone who isn't 22-35 and gorgeous.

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The Miss Julia books are pretty good for that. They're by Ann B. Ross. I don't know if you can find them outside of the South, though, because they're pretty regional.

[identity profile] megan-moonlight.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I So AGREE WITH THIS <333
There should be more. Now I just want to read more fanfics for "RED" XDDD

And I approve of The Mist picture.

[identity profile] cindyisboring.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There's actually a movie coming out soon (don't remember the title) about an old man and old woman falling in love. They looked adorable.

[identity profile] skassa.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Just tossing in my agreement with this secret. I find British shows tend to be a bit better with providing characters of various ages, though it might just be me...
herongale: (abe x miha- i like you!)

[personal profile] herongale 2011-01-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Uncle Iroh from the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon is kind of an amazing older character, complex and relatable. He's possibly my favorite character in that entire series, in fact. Check it out.

I agree. I recommend Doctor Who series 4 for Wilfred Mott, the grandfather of Donna Noble, who is basically the most amazing guy ever. <3

You know what I want? More romantic comedies with older actors. Like Something's Gotta Give, except, you know, good.

I agree. I suspect books might be better in that respect. Seconding the recs for The West Wing and Fringe, from which the wonderfully developed (endearing/crazy/proud/broken), central character in my icon originates.

[identity profile] jesus-beezus.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh the goddamn Mist. A friend of mine invited me over for fun and hanging out and watching a movie yaay!!1! THEN SPRUNG THE MIST ON ME.

but I read the story recently and I liked it.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
There are a couple British shows you might enjoy. They're mostly comedies. Last of the Summer Wine (not everyone's bag, but about a group of retired people and their wacky hijinks...) and one of my favorite shows, Waiting for God. Also a comedy, and does a decent job (well, from my early-20s perspective) of exploring what it is to get older and feel at a loose end after a very active life.

Diana Trent is badass. *thumbs up*

This is one of the reasons I liked Up so much. It's a family movie with an older person as the protagonist. He's not even in the mentor role, if anything he learns more than the child in the movie does. It shows that you don't have to have a protagonist the same age as the target audience.
