If this secret was in Spanish (and in the Spanish version for fandomsecrets) I would think you're part of Los Malos y Fics v1 or v2 LOL

(Anonymous) 2011-01-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound like an ass.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if English isn't your first language and the commenters are offering concrit on word choice or sentence structure (without being rude about it), why wouldn't you take the suggestions into consideration? Wouldn't you want to improve in that regard?

More importantly, if you don't actually want concrit, you shouldn't ask for it. There are actually people out there (me included) who do want concrit because we're trying to improve our writing.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
This was my thought as well. I'm ESL too, and I really want to be corrected when I'm wrong, or told about awkward phrasing and clunky writing in general so that I can improve.

Also, I think characterisation crit is one of the most important parts of a review. Sure, it's often a question of interpretation, but it can be easy to dig yourself too deep into your own fanon so that you lose sight of canon. Having someone challenge your characterisation is one of the best ways to see if it really holds up.

[identity profile] carey-pontmercy.livejournal.com 2011-01-22 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
My initial reaction to concrit is often defensive, even though I don't want it to be. I just keep it to myself, though. After a few minutes, I'm able to look at it more objectively and then decide if I want to follow it or not.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So you know your English isn't perfect, and yet you get all pissy when people actually try to help you? Even when you asked for that help?

OP SUCKS.

I'd be a lot less amused if the Anon hadn't misspelled "criticizing" and then used "critic" wrongly at the end.

As it is, the amount of supercilious, misguided FAIL in this secret totally made my night.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Another whiny, self-entitled, hypocritical person writing and posting fanfiction on the internet.

I am not surprised.

[identity profile] sochitelya.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ehh, I feel the same way at first. As long as you don't think you're the best writer EVAR!!!11 and you're polite to people who do crit you, I don't really see a problem. Lots of people get defensive over stuff they've worked hard on, whether they've asked for crit or not.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't write my fic in English but in my native language...

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Then you should get someone who speaks your native language to beta your fics for you. If you're writing in your own language and just not bothering to read it over, of course you're going to get people pointing out spelling or context mistakes. Get over yourself.

If you don't want critique, don't ask for it. Most people give critique to help writers be the best they can be, not to be jerks. At least be honest with your readers so they don't waste their time evaluating a fic of a writer who's as defensive as you are.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
To some degree I do want critic... I just can't handle it well.
That's the whole point of the secret. If I could get over that that easily, there wouldn't be a fucking point in even making that secret.

(Also I blame my inability to handle critic on barely getting some. Usually people are just worshipping my stuff and crawling up my ass, instead of evaluating anything.)

I read over my fics several times, before I post them, a couple more times after posting them. Actually I barely see any fic posted in my language, where the language is as flawless as in my stories. So yeah, finding a beta I can trust, who also knows my fandom's canon, isn't really the easiest thing.

* critique

or "constructive criticism," often shortened to "concrit"

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Thx. (And no, I didn't just think "Bwaaah, gdiaf", I really mean "Thank you" ^^°)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
So you'd rather just make the same mistakes over and over again and have people laugh behind your back? Alrighty then.
