Not the person you're replying to, but I personally dislike Kairi because she's more like a plot device than a character in her own right. She spends most of KH1 unconscious, and the few scenes she has do nothing to endear her to me. Within the first ten minutes of the game she tells Sora that they should take the raft and go and basically ditch her supposed other BFF, the one whose idea it was to build the raft in the first place. Her not caring about Riku (at least not as much as she does Sora) can be seen later on in the game, where she agrees to leave Riku with no fuss whatsoever, while yelling that she "won't let [Sora] go." For the rest of the game, she is never seen worrying about Riku the same way she does Sora. Even if she does have a crush on Sora, Riku is supposedly one of her best friends and she should at least show SOME concern over his whereabouts.

Even in KH2, she brushes him off by saying that she "knows" she'll see him again (with a smile and peaceful expression on her face!), despite the fact that the last time she saw him he was trying (and failing) to fight off the darkness. When she stepped into the portal, she apparently only asked around for Sora, judging by Olette's comments that it was romantic. So yeah, not exactly seeing this "kind, sympathetic" girl that supports her friends not names Sora.

That ties into one of my main problems with her character as a whole: her character revolves around Sora. Every scene she's in somehow ties back to the boy. Every. Single. One. I saw a faint glimmer of potential in KH2 when she says that she's tired of being left behind and wants to fight to protect her friends.

And how did that plotline turn out? She is literally handed a weapon within the last 30 minutes of the game and whacks a few heartless with it. Then the weapon disappears and is never seen again for the rest of the game, even when all the keyblade wielders needed to summon their keyblades to open a door (I think. I haven't played it in a while so my memory's fuzzy, but I definitely remember them all summoning their weapons for something). It was a Big Lipped Alligator Moment if I ever saw one. B

But what's most annoying is that she never actually has to work hard to get her weapon. It is LITERALLY handed to her. This is annoying, especially since Riku got a WHOLE GAME showing how he he becomes worthy to wield the keyblade.

And the cherry on top the pile of shit that was her character arc? (I don't know if you mind BBS secret ending spoilers or not, but if you do you should probably skip to the next paragraph). She ends up back where she started, agreeing to sit back on her ass while Sora and Riku go on another adventure. And from the previews of the 3DS game, she's apparently back on the island making seashell charms or some shit, because Sora and Riku get important things to do and she's just a pile of wasted potential.

I honestly get the feeling that Nomura either doesn't care about her character, or doesn't know what to do with her. Probably a mixture of both. Namine is a perfect example of a character who actually does stuff, and is well-liked by most of the fandom, even by the people who dislike Kairi. That's because she is well-developed, capable, and has a well-rounded character arc and personality. And she doesn't fight, not even once. But if you want to assume that everyone hates Kairi because she doesn't kick ass, go right on ahead. You'd be wrong, but go right on ahead. A lot of people don't like her because she doesn't really DO anything. While characters like Riku and Namine move the plot, she is constantly being moved and pushed around by it.

I'm not saying that there isn't a lot of fandumb surrounding Kairi. There is. But to say that there's no reason to dislike Kairi is simply untrue.

I agree about the whole keyblade thing. It really bothered me actually, glad I wasn't the only one.

I agree with pretty much all of this, though I still like Kairi. I don't really blame the character in situations like this, but the writers for not doing a good job.

These are actually valid reasons for disliking Kairi. I agree about her not seeming to care about Riku and about her random keyblade, and I really do wish there'd be a KH game with her, Riku AND Sora all fighting together. I don't dislike Kairi though because I agree with [livejournal.com profile] streetcake. She's not a bad character but she's been involved with some pretty bad writing on the creators' part. It felt like they didn't know what to do with her and just dumped her off from time to time somewhere.

I have to disagree with you about Namine' though. Namine' I felt was used as a plot device even moreso than Kairi. What I never understood was if she can mess with memories, why didn't she just make it so the Organization forgot who she even was so she could escape? She did do a few innovative things like helping Kairi escape in KH2, but she was nauseatingly weak at times. I felt Xion was even worse, personally. But to be fair, all three characters' problems could be assumed to be a product of bad writing.
