I feel plenty pretty just dressing like an average joe. I shave, I shower regularly, I don't look like a slob. But I don't put hours into it and I never will because I'm not offended by not being surrounded by ~*beautiful people*~ (and if I were doing it for attention, no need, before anyone says "I BET U UGLY"). Women also, you know, have jobs these days that they have to work and don't have time for all that unless they really care about it, and man, when I already get up at four in the morning for work... I don't want to get up at three just so I can elaborately style my hair.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well congratulations for making a choice about your appearance, while simultaneously judging me for making a different choice about my appearance.

I must not have a job, or be a complete jerk, since I put more effort into my appearance than you do. Because the exact amount of effort you put into how you look (shaving, bathing regularly, and not looking like a "slob") is the correct amount. Anything more is conforming to society's standards. What you do isn't conforming at all. It's just exactly what any reasonable person would choose to do on their own, because every woman would spontaneously decide that some hair needs to go away, and other hair is cool, even without our cultural guidelines for appearance. Congratulations on being such a free thinker and showing the rest of us the light. Oh, how I wish I had the brains and confidence to look ugly and out of place instead of appropriately dressed and fashionable.

I have no idea what is going on in this comment

I know, dear. Literacy is hard! Don't conform to other people's standards of reading comprehension!

Man, you're just a pile of cupcakes.

[identity profile] culpeper.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I don't either.

From the other comments, it seems as though anything short of agonizing for perfection (as opposed to simply being clean, grooming oneself, and dressing neatly) is just unacceptable to anon ):

[identity profile] culpeper.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously :c It makes me sad that there's people who think that, and I'm the sort of girl who loves heels and lipstick. I just know everyone likes and looks good/"feminine"/whatever in different stuff. :/

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have a language degree, and I can't figure it out, either. It starts off in one direction, then veers sharply to the left.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Those terrible, terrible people that can't do anything else but look ugly; how dare they think they are worth anything, or, even worst, appear to actually fell better about themselves than you?!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
But of course they can do something about it. They can try to look nice instead of purposefully making themselves look worse.

It's like saying people shouldn't try to have good manners, because that's conforming to unnatural standards, and some people are born with less natural grace than others.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Look, having good or bad manners is something that affects others- it's about how we treat other people. Basically what you are saying is that, if someone doesn't shave or wears nice clothes, they're treating you badly?

Ok then

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, some of them can't. And some of them are sick and tired of trying to satisfy judgmental a-holes such as yourself, to no avail. So, they stop trying and live with it, while you sit back and comfortably scoff them out for "purposefully making themselves look worse". STFU about stuff you clearly know jack-shit about.

And comparing looks to manners (in other words, treating other people with respect)? Yeah. Just STFU.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
You can take all the time in the morning to bathe, shave, put up your hair, put on that makeup, press your clothes, dress in the latest fashion, adorn yourself with jewelry, wear just the right amount of perfume, and make sure you are the peak of womanly beauty and perfection.

But all of that above will not make your personality pretty, especially if you don't just take happiness for yourself in these rituals but rather use them to judge and condemn others around you that don't have the same ideals as you do.

So, why exactly do you do these things? Do you feel feminine and empowered because these things bring them out in you, or because you use them to assure yourself that you're better than everyone else? Cause, from what I'm reading, I'm really seeing the latter. Sorry.
