That anon sounds like a more bitter version of myself, tbh; I could have written a lot of that. I eventually worked out that I was FTM and a lot of that resentment came from forcing myself (and having society force me) to be a woman and having it just not work; that then led to huge amounts of internalised transphobia because I thought that being trans was unfeminist because why did I hate being a woman? why did I see female as being wrong? it must be because I'm a misogynistic prick. *cue selfhate*

It's comments like the anon's that sometimes make me wonder if maybe I'm really not trans after all, and just a regular self-hating woman.

The thought that the anon may be trans and hasn't figured it out or come to terms with it yet is what makes me pity hir, because yes, self-hate like that fucking sucks. It's the hate ze has for other women that makes me think ze is a complete tool. Don't know if you're acquainted with akai_senshi, but he's living proof that you can be a FtM without being a misogynist prick.

In my case I spent most of my childhood and teenagehood furious at how boys were allowed to be themselves but girls had to act artificially like girls, and I hated those girls for submissively conforming to that arbitrary ruling instead of challenging it and fighting the patriarchy and being themselves like boys were allowed to. Eventually I learnt that they were being themselves, and... it was a huge and scary revelation that completely shook my identity.

I think I've encountered akai_senshi before. I know lots of feminist FtMs are out there; but my exposure to transphobic radfem groups - who believe trans men to be traitors to feminism pandering to the patriarchy - resulted in a lot of ingrained ideas that I'm still finding hard to shake. Because I still feel like a massive hypocrite when I go, 'yeah, women are equal to men and should be treated as such. ...brb transitioning to male.'

Don't feel like a hypocrite. Any feminist worth hir salt knows that believing men and women are equal means that having female anatomy does not invalidate someone's identity as a man, and that man is betraying no cause by changing his body to reflect his gender. A person's sex, regardless of whether they were born with it or transitioned, should have no impact on their ability to be a feminist.

I am really, really sorry you had/have to go through that bullcrap. Anti-trans women give feminists a bad name.

Just for the record: there were probably a fair proportion of sensitive, gentle, and/or femmy boys around you who weren't being allowed to be themselves, either. Gender-role pressure isn't particularly pleasant for either gender.
