1) Beecher/Keller were THE biggest pairing in the series, so its no surprise they got the majority of fic written about them. Them being (relatively) pretty and white helps a lot, too. Not denying that. But it's not like, say, Said/Alvarez, to pull a random pairing out of a hat, had several seasons worth of UST, confessions of love, betrayal, head trips, and kissing, and the fandom STILL shipped Beecher/Keller.

2) A lot of those connections you point out were based on rape/dub-con. Even in OZ fandom, ficcers are reluctant to ship Robson, for example, with anyone he had any sort of sexual encounter with. I'm not saying B/K is the model of a healthy gay romance, but it's certainly easier to stomach than, say, Schillinger/random prag.

3) OZ was one of my first major fandoms, back in the late '90s (99-ish I got into the show and the fandom). A lot of OZ fic from the fandom's active days has gone POOF -- archives disappeared, authors drifted from fandom and deleted their stuff, that sort of thing. Some of that vanished fic included stuff that featured Cramer, Hill, etc.

4) I am a HUGE Torquemada/Alvarez shipper, and if Torquemada had been around for more than like 2 episodes, they probably would've been the second-biggest ship in the series, after B/K.

I don't know this series, but I have to say, in a show that seems to have so many nonwhite characters, it's kind of upsetting that the main pairing is still a white couple. But that's how I feel about almost every show that boasts a wide minority character base, but curiously still has white main characters and main pairings.

But the reason Beecher/Keller are the biggest pairing, is they had a long, developed romantic relationship in canon. Oz may have been about a men's prison, but most of the relationships on the show were platonic or nonsexual. In canon, there were plenty of storylines that focused on minority characters, and several main characters who were minorities. That fandom likes to write slash, and there is a handy canon slash couple to focus on, does not diminish the importance of these characters. It just means this relatively small fandom doesn't write as much for fanon couples, or gen, than they do canon-based slash.

Most of the other fandoms I'm in consist of slash pairings with little to no canon support (hello, Harry/Draco). Beecher/Keller is a canon slash pairing, with five seasons of supportive evidence to back it up, and I can't blame people jumping on that.
