This, mostly. Though I do think that the 'crazy' part comes - at least in part - from the activists that go too far. I've seen that actually have resorted to violence, and/or even stealing animals from homes - only to be put in worse conditions by said activists. That's not the majority, but there are enough of them out there to take attention away from the sane activists.
