Aaah, the childhood memories! I totally agree with you, anon. The actress in that version is just a perfect Mary Poppins (albeit good-looking, but behaviour-wise she totally is!). Also, the music is just ❤. I still listen to the songs sometimes.

In the original Mary Poppins book, there are *no* dancing penguins. That was something made for the movie. They don't even go to the horse race. That was *also* made for the movie.

To be honest, the Disney film is *very* sugar coated. The stage musical does a better job at following the book than the movie does.

YESS!! I love the Russian version (The songs are soo much more lovely and subtle). Maybe i'm baised though! <-- American-born Russian

There will never be an accurate Mary Poppins adaptation. Mary Poppins is quite a sarcastic character in the books, and at times she can be nice, but she is not sugar coated like how Disney made her out to be.

The stage musical does a better job at portraying Mary. Still, it's not as accurate as it should be, but its heaps better than the film.

Thank you OP. I was SO disappointed when I saw the Disney version; having grown up with the Russian one, it simply sucked for me. Sorry, but that's just how it felt. Russian Mary was, like, my first girl-crush.
Also: Tabakov playing the Evil Governess XD It was awesome, but I can't take the actor seriously ever again. I remembered why he seemed so familiar in 17 Moments, which sent me into a laughing fit of doom. I even have an icon ^^

I think it's YMMV, really :¬)

*coughs* For me, there will never be a Mary Poppins to match the Disney version - but that's probably because it was one of the first films I ever went to see as a child, and I adored it. :¬) Still brings back great memories...

...Although Dick Van Dyke's accent...er, yeah. Even back then, I knew that no-one else in the world, let alone a Cockerney, spoke "loike daat".

well, no surprise here as LJ is now OWNED by Russians (if I'm not mistaken), but LJ is not F!S))
I'm just surprised by the increase of Russian fanbase appearing exactly here) and it makes me wonder - if once in a while several people post, there must be other, who only lurk))
