I'd really like to see an adaption of Beauty and the Beast where Beauty isn't much of a conventional beauty at all. It's a shame this movie version decided not to go the way of the book.

That wouldn't happen to be Beauty, by Robin McKinley, would it? Because I haven't read it personally, but a friend of mine loves it to bits and recommended it to me based on the fact that the heroine is considered quite ugly by her society.

I don't think as highly of RM's Beauty as the general internet seems to, but I do recommend it. While it is very good both it and her later Rose Daughter suffer from focusing so much on Beauty alone and not her relationship with the Beast, that I never feel compelled by their romance.

Mild spoiler alert: it should be noted that that Beauty only considers herself ugly (tall, awkward, graceless) when she is in fact more an ugly duckling. :/

Actually I meant the book Beastly, which this movie is based. I honestly wanted to like this book, but really didn't aside from the blind tutor. However the Beauty character is very plain and over looked, and not in that hottie with glasses and a pony-tail way.

The first I heard of Beastly was that it suddenly appeared on a shelf in my local bookstore with a very Twilight-like cover and the words "Now a major motion picture!" blazoned across it, which sort of coloured my expectations, so I'm not sure if I'd like it if I read it. :\ Although an ACTUALLY PLAIN girl as the romantic lead? I might have to risk it. (Tell me she doesn't get a 'magic model makeover', please?)

I'll warn you that I'm trudging into mild/vague spoiler territory, if you'd like to stop reading:

The book was quite effective at making her plain. In fact, when she's introduced I think it's just to show what a douche the main character is and I didn't think more about her. Imagine my surprise when she shows up like thirty pages later. And I'm fairly certain there is not transformation on her part, though I will say that since the book is from Beast's POV, as he comes to love her, the descriptions become for favorable. But she doesn't transform into a swan, no. :)

My interest is piqued, now I'm deciding whether I should read it. Why didn't you like the book?

I assume we're talking about Beastly? In truth I've been thinking I need to give it another try, but I wanted to like it but just really didn't care about "beauty" or "the beast." :/ I think the writing was mediocre, and modern day fairy tales have to be done really, really well for me to get into them. But mostly I didn't care for the first person narrative and I found the love interest to be a bland victim (really wish, with the contemporary setting, they didn't go the damsel in distress route). Honestly the only character I liked was the tutor, who is to be played by NPH! In that respect, I think the movie might entertain me more than the book, despite have Vanessa as the "homely" beauty. :/

Oh, nvm, I just read the rest of the comments and figured out it's about Beastly. That'll teach me to comment before finding out what the secret's about.
